That's true-- my maternal grandparents came from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, while my paternals came from Wales.

But the global map has changed quite substantially since the fall of the Iron Curtain, and I worry that the kids today aren't learning geography the way I did when there were less autonomous European countries to have to learn. When I was their age and took a field trip to the United Nations, there were only like 140 member states there-- now it's closer to 200, at a very rough guesstimate. At least sixty new countries to have to pinpoint on a map!

By "continental" US, we usually mean just the lower 48.. even though technically Alaska is part of the continent. It's a local thing. <<shrug>>

Sure, letters are still the same flat price for all US possessions. I was talking about rather larger postage articles (e.g. from eBay, etc).

Holland refers to either South or North Holland, 2 of the 12 provinces. It's commonly mistaken, but it's also an old word.

In Slovakian it's common name is also "Holandsko", but they have a correct translation: "Nizozemsko" (or sth like that)

It's pretty common (sadly IMO) to say 'Holland' in Swedish too. (The Netherlands = Nederländerna).

Anyway -- I really enjoyed seeing the border crossings between East and West Germany. If anyone has more pictures of border crossings of East/West Germany, Soviet Union, etc. that would be great. I'd love to see Lithuania-Poland for example, Finland-Russia, etc.

It's shorter anyway, so it's easier and 'quicker' to use "Holland".
