Ah, one more thing - never ever say you actually wanted to cross the border ("But officer, we only wanted to see how is it over there") - that way it is attempted illegal crossing and is regarded as crime being subject to fine or even imprisonment.

However, if you have 10 bottles of vodka or 40 packs of fags with you, then it won't help either

Why don't the Croats go to BiH for skiing? Much cheaper *and* less traffic, so less waitingtimes for the bordercrossing

Is there no possibility to ski in Croatia itself?

it is, but also ski tracks are not good enough for experienced skiers. our mountains are not that type of mountains that would have enough snow for extensive ski tourism. maybe those between Karlovac and Rijeka, there could be enough snow ans terrain is good, but anway, those mountatins have only peaks over 1000 m, and under it you cannot have good ski tourism. ski places here are good enough only for really recreational one day skiing

Just one border remained between Italy and other countries, but thanks to the schengen treaty, the border between Swiss and Italy is gone in december.
At leas until february when a referendum will confirm or abolish the adoption of the treaty in switzerland.

Are the Swiss still going to vote? So there is still a possibility that there are checks again next summer?

It was quite a useless decision to join Schengen in the first place, if they're still holding a referendum. Why didn't they first hold a referendum? Just because the Swiss government acted..... Swiss again?

I fear some Swiss parties will get some irrational fears about crime and illegal immigration and make border controls effective again after a referendum

There's already been a referendum about Schengen in Switzerland, and I don't think there's another one in preparation. AFAIK Switzerland will stay out, if it won't allow Romanian and Bulgarian workers (which is a bit strange, given the fact not even all EU members allow them).

The association to the pact were done before Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU, so there will be a 2009 referendum on a bilateral labour agreement and free circulation for citizens from the 2 newest member states, and even though Jacques Barrot suggested that if the Swiss voted no, this might compromise their participation in Schengen

Yeah, from what I've heard the Swiss are quite "scared" of people from the newer EU countries, still thinking they're all criminals. However, it's also due to the media, every incident with Bulgarians/Romanians are named in the Netherlands while they are only a small fraction of the total crime.

Also, I don't think crime would just disappear if they get out of Schengen. Crime has no borders. Even before many countries in central Europe joined Schengen, we had some slight problems with Yugoslavians/Albanians so they manage to get into a country anyway.

Personally, I think strict border checks should be a thing of the past. A day waiting at the border is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. You don't stop criminals/terrorists with them anyway, but you'll only hit the ordinary civilians and truckers.

Yes, criminals are only a small part of the total amount of people crossing the border. Still, no control would also be wrong, because border checks not only about tracing criminals, it's also about checking goods and see if nothing illegal is being smuggled into the country. On the other hand, those extensive checks on the Russian and the Belarussian border, with all this bureaucracy, it quite exagarrated.

It's also weird that the Netherlands still rejects Bulgarian and Romanian workers, though both countries are EU-member now
