Yes, I remember that from when I was kid (late 80's): just off the toll plaza direction France in the middle of both carriageways there was a building with police offices and places to exchange money. You could either stop there or carry on, but in that case there used to be cops that randomly waved you through or asked to stop for a control.

i thought so that it was there. btw, now i see at Google Maps there are still visible remains of some customs-booths-like facilities at the exact position as MrAkumana describes. obviously it was shared by both french and italian officers.

this facilities that Chris describes are probably part of Interporto Ventimiglia.

They've gone now, but a lot of Google's satellite mapping is hopelessly out of date.

Does anyone know when border controls between the original 6 EU members started to loosen? I know that border controls were eliminated very early between the Benelux countries - and we have evidence that in 1989, the NL-D border was subject to loose controls - but what about F/D for instance?

x-type - do you know of any locations where the original Yugoslav control facilities still exist and are being used? I know of several places where abandoned controls exist - but I'd like to find some location that still uses the same infrastructure and layout as in YU times.

I think there is a small border crossing between Serbia and Hungary where SFRJ insignia aren't even repainted !

I always wonder why they waste so much money and inconvenience people for these

Why not just have all the heads of government land their government planes at some military airbase and stay in there? Already they are secure from the outside, they have their own air strips, plenty of people with guns already there doing nothing... and even plenty of these in Germany

i know for Gola and Terezino Polje, they look just the same as 30 years ago. i used both of them last year. Gola in May, and officers told me that they were just about to move in few days to Hungarian part as joined control point. Terezino Polje in August still had separated controls.

Who cares about money.... The meeting costs are (officially) just 130 million €. Peanuts. The German association of Taxpayers claims that it costs 360 million € though. E.g. 17,000..20,000 policemen are involved...

Elmau is so beautiful. Look:

Cool ones...

The first ES-PT border is a zip line where ticket includes a drive down and ferry back to the parking.

It may be the only one zip line in the world. Isn't it?

Nepal and Bhutan citizens can easily enter India(legally),there are frequent train and bus services b/w India and Bangladesh.Traders are allowed to go into China(tibet) via 2-3 trade posts.Myanmar is easy to visit for local tribes but not for foreigners.
Pakistan border is very tightly controlled.
