Slovenia and Croatia are EU countries, Schengen or not. Serbia is a non-EU country so no way the border crossing will be torn down (even if they think they're the Switzerland of the Balkans ).

Horgos 2 opening. Unlike the highway crossing this one can be used by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Not yet, Amapá state government says that the bridge may be inaugurated by the end of the year.

The Horgos 2 crossing - am I correct in saying that they've built something entirely new there and left the old crossings alone? That certainly doesn't look like the old Hungarian one...

Anyway, today's trip was to the port of Split to see how controls are working in practice there. Nothing much to report - they seem to be taking controls a little bit more seriously there (visual checks on EU citizens, full checks including car registration/driving licences for non-EU citizens). The Croatian Customs were also present for some reason, and non-EU trucks seemed to be receiving a lot of attention from them despite Split-Ancona being an intra-EU journey.

Something else that I meant to mention - I spotted that Croatia and Slovenia have removed all the "CARINA / DOUANE" signs from the border crossings. There's now nothing there to replace them - so there's absolutely no warning of approaching border crossings now. Odd.

Some other news : the long-running fight to open up Gabela Polje in Metkovic for international traffic has finally happened. The problem is that locals are now even more angry - it turns out that everyone is using Gabela Polje as an alternative to the massive jams in Doljani (with Nova Sela almost completely ignored for some reason...) - and so locals now have to contend with huge jams blocking the crossing. I'll try and make a visit there this week to see what the story is on the ground.

But does anyone know why Nova Sela seems to be the black sheep of Balkan border crossings? There's no logical reason to avoid it - yet everyone just pours through the crossings in Metkovic instead.

I am not sure, the old mortar structure was thoroughly reconstructed, but I think everything that was of temporary character before was replaced. The only problem is there are almost no photos of the reconstructed Serbian building (the bigger structure, with yellow walls now) as the ceremony was held in front of Hungarian containers (and lunch in Serbian building).

New one

not some Kosovo Gypsies, but thousands of Kosovo Albanians.
BTW we were talking about SLO-HR border.

Such a pompous ceremony of that S-H crossing. You'd think it's the fall of the Berlin wall or something.

Border crossing is now modernized and will be helpful in such a great traffic in this month. It's very near main border crossing and easy top continue exit on M3 highway to Budapest.(By the way yesterday waiting on exit from Croatia to Serbia was 20 km and 3 hours of waiting!)

Carnage on the HR/BiH borders. It seems that some idiot within the BiH border police has demanded that they scan every single document - but most border crossings are only equipped with one scanner. Reports are that it's taking up to 4 minutes to process a single car - and so queues are now beyond ridiculous. If this really is to be the new policy, then BiH really has to build new crossings as an absolute priority.

I can't vouch for the accuracy, but someone here (I'm in Croatia now) told me that BiH have also started to check at the Neum I and II crossings. Could just be rumour and gossip, but if it's true, it will really cause carnage.

Article in Croatian here - http://www.slobodnadalmacija.hr/Dubr...0/Default.aspx

Anyone know anything more about this new BiH crossing regime?

According to Wikipedia it was completed in August 2011.
From recent photos it looks like already old.

True, a lot of the stuff reported about the border in Slobodna Dalmacija seems to be always from the "everything is fine in Croatia, it's Bosnia to blame" angle.

We'll see tomorrow, I'll check out some border crossings and see if passports are being systematically scanned.
