According to the dictionaries, actually the German "Grenze" is... a loan word from Polish.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Grenze

In Polish it comes from "grań", which literally means the peak line of a mountain range. It seems, English uses the French word "aręte" for it. And it means edge or ridge in French.

Grań in Polish meant originally the same as aręte in French.

Czech have "hranica", it's the same word as "granica" in Polish.

I found a text - sadly, it's in Polish - about the etymology of the Polish word "granica" on the website of University of Warsaw: http://www.slowanaczasie.uw.edu.pl/s...esnia-granica/

But it's not a linguistics thread... so if you want to continue the discussion, we could move, at least, to the Roadside Rest Area.

Granica (Граница) is border or borderline in BCSM and in MK, also they use the same word in Bulgaria.
Also this word is used to express a limit to something. Sorry for OT.

So same as in Polish. And in German too (a limit in mathematics seems to be "Grenzwert" in German).

It's not OT, this topic is actually about borders/granicas.

Border crossing in Polish - przejście graniczne.

Ščecinas is just a proper transcription of Szczecin in Lithuanian phonemes.

Balstogė – yes, this name is usually used in 80% of texts rather than Bialystokas.

One prominent example here is the historical Lithuanian name of Koenigsberg/Kaliningrad – some 15 years ago Karaliaučius became quite popular and even overtook Kaliningradas in Lithuanian lexicon before maybe 7 years. The revived name was even adopted by the government (e. g., traffic signs display Karaliaučius/Kaliningrad) and the media.

In most cases nowadays Kaliningradas refers to the oblast (some similarities with Leningrad and Sverdlovsk oblasts) and Karaliaučius – the city.

In Poland nobody actually uses the old Polish name (Królewiec - equivalent to Königsberg) any more.

And Kaliningrad Oblast is Obwód Kaliningradzki.

No idea, how I should literally translate "obwód" to English. One of its meaning - in electrical engineering - is a circuit, another one - in mathematics - is perimeter or circumference. In administration, this word is sometimes used for each of the areas being a result of an administrative division. For example, a primary school has its "obwód", so an area, from which the children are assigned to the specific school. In elections, it's an area assigned to a single polling station (sometimes it can be as big as a single building, for example in hospitals and prisons). Also the huntsmen and the fishermen have their "obwóds", as well as the scouts.

So I think, it should be translated as Kaliningrad Area, or something like it.

I would think "district" is closest for that definition (of administrative boundaries)

I guess it is similar to "obwodnica" for roads...

Yes, "obwodnica" comes from "droga obwodowa" - "circumference road".

Not very politically correct but funny...

I think it refers about the fact of Austria (and 'old EU' in general) being 'islamized' by the huge flow of refugees from Muslim countries. That's why I said it's politically uncorrect.

It's happening already....according to latest Al Jazeera Balkans report, another Visegrad Four country just started running electricity through its fence on the Serbian border...

I never understood why Slovenia and Hungary threat with fences to other weaker european countries. It is pitty, because back in the time they were communists states and now play to the rest.

Strong Macedonia is not treating Greece bad enough with it's fence, so we need more lines.

Those who electrify border fences tell others not to touch them

I'm not off-topic I am speaking about Hungary's electric voltage fences on its borderline with Serbia and Croatia just off the international crossings.
