IJmuiden, NL (west of Amsterdam), ferryterminal for the daily ferry to Newcastle, UK

Dutch passport control (here, as every day after 14h, outbound, in the morning it's inbound)

Newcastle, UK, British passport booth: Only used for inbound in the morning. Picture taken around 16h, so not in use at that moment.

Security check for the outbound (Used by customs in the morning for inbound traffic)

Chadian flag is almost the same as the Romanian flag (?)

I do not know about Romania, Moldova or Chad flag but Andorra took a middle flag between Spanish and French, hence Red (both), Yellow (Spain) and Blue (France)

Are you sure?

Anyway that's maybe why their flag looks like dirty a French one...But what about Romania in that regard? I mean, no excuses!!

Yep, I already knew that, great flag, I like it! (as well as the Romanian one BTW.. I was just trolling around in my previous posts, so take it easy, dear Romanian friends, if you read my posts)

Well, to be honest, I saw thousands of "Romanian flags" in a small area.

The day I was in Andorra was just later of national day and flag was absolutely in all corners of the country (and went to the church were country origin comes... and that was a full game of red-blue-yellow colours those days...). But as usual, in many of these flags coat of arms doesn't appear to make them simply (or cheaper), thus... Romanian flag in all Andorra for several day.

Back to border. For passports, no controls but some officers in each side glancing all cars in both directions
For freight. Andorra took randomly one car every.... one thousand????
I crossed twice border, first one no cars stopped in Spain, second time randomly and not requested for me so drive through

By the way, no mobile roaming for 1 km. Later... 2 euro/minute. I guess, arriving to Pas de la casa, possible to take any French company and EU free roaming, but inside the country, terribly expensive. In the appartments I went, they sent me an email prior to arrive saying wifi password and, just in case I arrived when nobody was in the desk, send a text message with free wifi. They knew it was very expensive for anyone coming from abroad (and for them, abroad means anywhere out of borders with Spain and France)

Indeed, never had personally any "roaming" issue in Le Pas de La Case...especially since indeed French mobile networks work over there (at least that was the case several years ago, i.e. last time I've been to Andorra).

I really wonder why there is no more free roaming service indeed.

This is, usually antennas take 7 km or so for service, it could be longer but tiny service.

And it depends where you set the antenna. If in a hill it could be easier to give service.

From Spain border, depending of company, 1-3 km of service is assured
And from France, I guess all in Pas de la Casa, nothing after mountain pass

But.... why companies do not set antennas here
https://www.google.es/maps/@42.54637...2!8i6656?hl=es

with a ski resort in the surroundings

in those mountains (witn another ski resort near)

https://www.google.es/maps/@42.63134...2!8i6656?hl=es

or some other places?

They will give 7 km good service, something away. Andorra la vella will not have service at all, but many of their ski resorts could have.

And... it is matter of money. Today, going to another EU country has no mobile charge. Entering in Andorra, depending of company, can have a "fine" of 2 euro/minute per calling.

It is a point where you hereby notice you have crossed a non-EU country despite barely passport control, using euro and they will speak your language

The ferry doesn't go to Newcastle. It goes to North Shields which is east of Newcastle.

It's widely referred to as the 'ferry to Newcastle' in the Netherlands.

They do not want. In the same way of Monaco (although they cannot receive people by sea) and other small countries, part of their economy is based in order that EU laws don't apply there.

They will join a lot of things, collaborate where you can trust... but will remain out of EU

... as does the ferry company DFDS Seaways (where "Amsterdam" is used in the English section instead of IJmuiden )

It's always amused me that they portray it as Amsterdam-Newcastle, when in reality it's IJmuiden-North Shields. Both 'nearby' to the cities (in Ryanair terms), but actually not near.

Not that's it's ever cheap!

Well, North Shields is only 10 km from Newcastle and part of a continuous urban area. IJmuiden is a bit further from Amsterdam (some 23 km) and is not considered an adjoining suburb.

Neither side are exactly easy access to the local transport network either, except for the pre-paid bus. At least Hull docks are actually in Hull!
