I have a question about communist Czechoslovakia and particularly the part where Danube meats Austria in Bratislava.
Were there any illegal crossings to the West from Bratislavi?

Yes, there was. A lot of people lost their lives trying to cross Morava.

I spent there my childhood. The Iron curtain maintenance road has become a cyclist path and the whole surroundings are very nice.

By the way, there is a rock on the Slovak territory few metres away. This rock was several times used as an escape area for hang-gliders. Some people managed to escape.

My elementary school (I attended from 1993 to 2002) was at the foothill of that rock and I remember officers with watch dogs searching the nearby forest every night until 1999.

The rock is on the right whereas Austria is on the left:

The same scene today:

It is really amazing how some borders have come down after iron curtain break. I was used just to have strong border pass but no fences (well... in one side, 70% of border are rivers indeed and in other side mainly high peaks and high mountain passes, thus even trekking, hard to reach border without being controlled).

But regardig Bratislava... let's remember a movie scene!!!.... in one film, J.Bond starts in Bratislava, it is snowed, scapes from police and arrives to Austrian border "as he can" (with his style).

I think it has been the only time that SVK-AUT border appeared in movies.

I am not sure if it was the real border station. AFAIK the scene was supposed to be there, but there were like mountains No mountains (not that high) are between Bratislava and Vienna

That's true. Have found several mistakes in these movies...

In the mid 70's in Toronto we had new neighbours from CZ (Bratislava) who I believe escaped in 1968 to Austria and then England for a year and then Canada. They lived in one part of Canada for about 6 years before moving next door to us. I seem to recall them saying they escaped across fields to Austria literally with the clothes on their backs. For many years they never went back for a visit but post 1989 they did go back a number of times.

I'll make a "guess the exact point in the road" game

Former N-141 E-F border pass

Where in hell it could be?

Seems in the same border (mountain pass) but there is no building there nowadays. Could be in the cross N-230-N-141 or so... but haven't find anything like it

It's exactly on the border, on top of the pass

https://www.google.es/maps/@42.76892...2!8i6656?hl=es

You see the rock behind the sign on the right side? That's the same rock like the on on the first picture behind the car.

He was local. I remember one of his quotes regarding socialism (paraphrased): "We, especially here in Devinska Nova Ves, perceive socialism differently than others living in the middle of Slovakia. We have had a chance to see the barbed wire, the bars separating our homeland"

I do not think it has something to do with the PM Mečiar. The controls were on Slovak side. Maybe some leftover after communist period. It was no problem to travel to Austria either after 1989 or 1993.

I only remember a story from 2000 when I was travelling to Greece by bus and a lady was expelled from the bus at the SK/AT border. I spotted she had a Czechoslovak passport

She was (likely) a single mother with tho young kids. I felt sorry for them - not every one could afford a foreign holiday that time.

I really leardned to respect cattle guards in outback Australia, as extremely rough ones occured on otherwise decent roads. Luckily, in the Nordics cattle // reindeer ;-) ) guards are normally of roughly the same standard as the rest of the road.

Yes, I've read some accounts somewhere of how it was a major people smuggling route in the 1990's for people from the FSU. The SK-UA border was apparently very easy to cross, especially in the early days of independent Slovakia, and it was easier to concentrate efforts on guarding the Austrian border. Apparently Slovakia also had huge problems in the 1990's with Ukrainians working in almost slave-conditions in factories in Eastern Slovakia, so the border remained 'hard' between Austria and Slovakia even if the fences were gone.

In second picture, Spanish officer was second in the right only. It was former uniform and today it is used in special days. They have changed to most common uniforms keeping colour, but remain it for ceremonies.

Third picture, there is a point that nowadays it is almost lost... crossing border and, usually, first building, currency exchange!!!
