Rumors say that part of the reason why they chose The New Square for their location was that there used to be an elaborate system of secret earthquake-resistant KGB tunnels spanning from under a former government building on the east end of the square all the way across the town to bomb shelters located in the outskirts of Almaty.

500,000 sq ft is not 152,400 sq metres. You forgot to square the factor (~0.3048). So itīs only about 46,450 sq metres, but thatīs still a lot for an underground mall.

true, except the conversion factor was applied incorrectly to meters not feet. kazakhstan used sq m, so the project was announced in sq m. To be more accurate, the project is 1.6 million sq ft. Though, according to Bazis' site it is 120K sq m (1.3 million sq ft).

I suspect any savings would be lost again due to the glass roof.
