Aeroswift majukan pusat ternakan burung walit RM4.5 juta
KULIM 17 Ogos – Aeroswift Consultancy Sdn. Bhd.

Wong Engineering wins up to RM30m jobs
By DAVID TAN

KULIM: Wong Engineering Corp Bhd has secured projects with an estimated RM20mil to RM30mil from customers in the United States and Europe.

The projects were for the fabrication of enclosures for equipment used in the medical, oil and gas, semiconductor and industrial equipment sectors, said executive chairman Datuk Freddy Wong.

To undertake the projects, he said the group recently invested about RM4.5mil in a production line that used laser cutting and turret punch process to manufacture enclosures and chassis.

“We will also design, manufacture and assemble the controlling module of the equipment,” he said.

Wong added that the group was now working with a foreign-owned oil and gas installation company in Malaysia to fabricate the components for equipment used in deep-sea oil exploration.

He said the group was also in discussions with US customers to manufacture test-measurement equipment used in the medical and industrial sectors.

“We are also exploring new areas of business such as producing parts for machines used in the financial sector,” he added.

On its environment business, Wong said the group was increasing the output of air detoxifier to 2,000 units next month from 1,000 currently to meet rising demand in the local and overseas markets in light of the Influenza A(H1N1) outbreak.

The air detoxifiers, marketed under the brand Okamizu, are produced at the group’s plant in Kulim Hi-Tech Park. The detoxifiers, which have CE certification, emit ozone that breaks down and neutralises bacteria, odours and cigarette smoke.

“About half of the units will be exported to countries such as South Africa, Indonesia and Iran. We have received orders from wholesalers of air detoxifier products in these countries,” said Wong.

He said only about 0.5% of Malaysia’s population used air detoxifiers and the company expected the figure to increase four-fold over the next two years.

“Revenue contribution from this segment is expected to grow to 10% from 5% presently for the 2010 fiscal year (ending Oct 31),” he added

BMW MD: Malaysia's economic situation will bode well for luxury car sales
By EUGENE MAHALINGAM

CYBERJAYA: While a gloomy cloud is still expected to hover over the global motor vehicle market for the rest of 2009, BMW Malaysia Sdn Bhd is cautiously optimistic that the situation in Malaysia will be a little bit different, said managing director Geoffrey Briscoe.

He said the Malaysian economy was faring well compared with the rest of the world and this would bode well for the local motor vehicle industry, especially the luxury segment.

“The Malaysian economy is holding up well. People are still spending. We’re not bullish about the rest of 2009 because we still feel that there are still tough times ahead,” he told StarBiz in an interview, adding that the local motor vehicle industry should “pick up” in 2010.

“Our finance rates are low. BMW Malaysia also provides good financial packages through its credit arm, BMW Credit, and our inventories are still high, so there has never been a better time to buy a BMW,” he added.

For the first seven months of 2009, BMW Malaysia sold 2,048 units compared with 2,133 during the same period in 2008.

It sold 3,512 BMW vehicles and 201 Mini cars in total last year.

BMW Malaysia’s share of the luxury segment was north of 40%, Briscoe said, adding that despite the dip in the 2009 year-to-date sales, he was upbeat about the company’s prospects going forward.

“Given the current economic climate, we are just 4% down in terms of sales volume. There are still several months to go for 2009 and we would be delighted if we could sell as many cars as we did last year,” he said.

BMW Malaysia’s bestseller is its 3-series (which averages 150 units a month) and the 5-series models.

“Our 3- and 5-series tend to go neck and neck in terms of volume but it’s usually the 3-series that’s ahead. We provide great financial packages for these models through BMW Credit,” Briscoe said.

BMW Malaysia has a majority of its 3- and 5-series completely-knocked-down models built at its plant in Kulim, Kedah, which is operated in partnership with plantation giant Sime Darby Bhd. Briscoe said the plant’s capacity was virtually “limitless.”

“The capacity of the plant can be extended to where we need it to be. We’d love to build more cars, like the X1 and 7-series and we are working with the Government to build those and other models in Malaysia,” he said.

As part of its strategy to provide “efficient dynamics,” BMW Malaysia plans to launch four diesel-powered vehicles in the last quarter of 2009; three of them sedans. The vehicles are expected to be in the 2.0 to 3.0-litre range.

“The diesel segment in Malaysia comprises either SUVs (sport utility vehicles) or commercial vehicles. There’s no passenger market for diesel and we want to create one,” Briscoe said.

He added that diesel-powered engines provided better torque and were more powerful, more fuel-efficient and produced less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared with their petrol-based counterparts.

Briscoe said about 60% of cars sold in Europe were equipped with diesel engines.

The high sulphur content in Malaysian diesel fuel has hindered performance and deterred many car companies from introducing diesel-powered vehicles.

While diesel-powered BMW vehicles were already capable of handling the substandard diesel quality here, Briscoe said the introduction of the four new models was timely as Petronas was launching its Euro 2M standard diesel nationwide tomorrow.

“The Euro 2M diesel has low sulphur content of less than 500 parts per million (ppm) compared to some 3,000 ppm. To a layman like myself, that sounds like a huge reduction and great for the environment!

“We feel that our timing is spot-on because we are bringing in the right diesel cars at the right time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Briscoe said BMW Malaysia was looking to expand its BMW Premium Selection (BPS) used-car programme to more dealers to combat the local motor vehicle industry’s growing “grey market.”

The grey market refers to the importation of used vehicles from foreign countries to Malaysia by non-franchise car dealerships, which are then sold at a cheaper price. The grey importers do not provide verifiable servicing history or factory-backed warranties.

“There’s nothing worse than having a customer say that they have a bad BMW car, which is why we offer a fully backed BPS car as a viable alternative to the grey imports,” Briscoe said.

Vehicles sold under the BPS programme need to have an approved and documented vehicle history as part of the criteria, pass a strict 72-point check by factory-trained BMW experts, are technically and visually refurbished, less than five years old or have less than 100,000-km mileage.

Two dealers currently run the programme – Auto Bavaria Glenmarie (launched in December 2008) and Ingress Auto (launched in August 2008).

“Sales for (Auto Bavaria) Glenmarie have increased 60%. The used car business currently makes up 40% of their business. It’s been an enormous success,” Briscoe said.

“We’re happy to have Ingress aboard. To be part of the BPS programme, the potential dealer needs to go through a rigorous approval process and sign our BPS agreement that’s three inches thick and we are looking at reaching out to more dealers,” he added.

On another note, Briscoe said he could not agree more with its principal in Germany to pull out of Formula One (F1) next season.

“To be in F1, one needs to make continuous progress and it wasn’t sustainable for BMW to remain in the sport.

“BMW is the greenest luxury car company in the world and spends billions on fuel efficiency and CO2 reduction measures under our ‘efficient dynamics’ programme. It’s only right that its resources are focused on that,” he said.

Tech park to attract RM2bil investments
By DAVID TAN

Kulim Technology Park holding talks with three US companies

KULIM: Kulim Technology Park Corp Sdn Bhd (KTPC), the developer of Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP), is negotiating with three US companies to bring in about RM2bil investments.

KTPC president Muhamad Sobri Osman said the companies were involved in the solar power, semi-conductor and pharmaceutical businesses.

“The solar power investment, likely to be around RM1.5bil, will be on a 75-acre site in phase three of the KHTP development.

President of Kulim Technology ParkCorp, Muhamad Sobri Osman(inset), says KYPC has recently completed the RM1 billion business centre wing.

“The phase, covering 432 acres, is over 90% complete in terms of infrastructure development,” he told StarBiz recently.

Sobri said he hoped the deals would be finalised in 12 months.

“The investment for the phase three infrastructure is around RM100mil,” he said, adding that KTPC was also in negotiation to bring in investment from a US company involved in nano-technology.

On the development of phase four of KHTP, Sobri said KTPC had recently secured a RM80mil soft loan from the Federal Government to lay high-technology and utilities infrastructure for the 450-acre site.

“We recently completed the RM11bil business centre wing, which has a built-up area of 75,000 sq ft.

“We are now bringing in tenants involved in business process outsourcing activities, research incubators and equipment support business,” he added.

In fulfilling its pledge to turn KHTP into the most successful high-technology park in the country, Sobri said the Federal Government had agreed to upgrade the present hospital so that it could handle hazardous chemical cases.

The Government had also given the green light to set up a police station and an industrial skills development centre.

Sobri said the capacity of the present 220MW power plant in KHTP, which is owned and managed by Northern Utility Resources, could be upgraded to 440MW.

“Thus, KHTP could cater to the needs of the new tenants without building another power facility.”

On housing for workers, Sobri said some 1,900 units of landed properties, priced between RM170,000 and RM220,000 each, were being developed.

“So far, about 1,900 units of landed and high-rise properties have been sold and occupied in KHTP,” he said.

Local mart for ETI’s solar power system
By DAVID TAN

davidtan@thestar.com.my

KULIM: ETI Tech Corp Bhd is targeting the domestic market for its recently unveiled solar power management system.

The entire system, comprising solar panels and lithium polymer batteries, was now being qualified by the Sabah government, executive director Dennis Chuah said after a demonstration of the solar power management system yesterday.

“The Sabah government plans to implement our solar power management system in rural areas where it is costly for Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd to lay power cables to supply electricity,” he said
ETI Tech spent about RM2mil and 18 months to research and develop the lithium polymer batteries for the solar power management system.

It outsourced the manufacturing of solar panels to a third party outside the country.

“Perak is the other state that has expressed interest in our solar power management system.

“We plan to market the system also in Kelantan, Trengganu and Pahang which have large segments of the population living in rural areas where Tenaga Nasional Bhd has yet to serve.

“To power their homes, these people curently use diesel generators, which are costly and not environmental-friendly,” Chuah said.

He added that the group’s solar power management system would cost the state governments between RM30,000 and RM100,000 to install, depending on the size of the household and their power needs.

Lead acid batteries are now popularly used in solar power management systems.

However, such batteries emitted sulphuric acid, which is poisonous and environmental-unfriendly, Chuah said.

“Lead batteries may be cheaper to use but they require the installation of more solar panels to recharge them.

“Lithium polymer batteries, although slightly more expensive to use, however, require fewer solar panels for recharging,” he said.

ETI Tech P.I.E. Industrial Bhd, Ire-Tex Corp Bhd and Pentamaster Corp Bhd, which recently entered the solar power business.

ETI Tech has been researching and developing lithium-polymer battery management systems for the past six years at its RM35mil facility in Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

Its lithium-polymer battery products for handphones, bicycles and golf-carts are the key driver of the group’s earnings.

For the first nine months ended May 31, the group posted RM14.8mil in pre-tax profit on revenue of RM59.7mil, compared with RM14.7mil and RM58.9mil respectively in the previous corresponding period.

Bard Malaysia Caters Free Meals For The Poor

KULIM, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- Whatever the economic scenario, Bard Sdn Bhd (also known as Bard Malaysia) will fulfil its social responsibility to feed the poor and the disabled via its free meal-for-all programme, 'Sajian Bakti'.

'Sajian Bakti', similar to the 'Soup Kitchen' programme in the West, provides free lunch for 100 poor and disabled people, including single mothers and senior citizens, every Wednesday and Sunday, beginning this week.

Bard Malaysia human resources manager Badrol Izam Baharom said the programme provides food to those who could only afford one meal a day," he told Bernama here on Monday.

He said Bard Malaysia, together with the Association for the Blind in Kulim, allocated RM100,000 as start-up fund to provide free meals annually.

The medical supply company, with its head office in New Jersey, US, began operations at the Kulim industrial zone since 1987, and has 700 local employees.

First cinema in Kulim

By Ezekiel Lee Zhiang Yang

One of the recently opened Big Cinemas outlet in Teluk Intan, Perak
26 Nov – The first cineplex in Kulim, Kedah will open on 27 November 2009 at Landmark Central Shopping Centre in Taman Resak.

The new Big Cinemas Lotus Five Star outlet is the largest cinema in Kedah with 6 screens (1,000 seater) and combined with their other 4-screen in Alor Star Mall makes the chain the largest exhibitor in the state with a total of 10 screens and a 1,725 seating capacity.

Reliance MediaWorks CEO Anil Arjun who operates the Big Cinemas brand worldwide says: "We see considerable untapped potential in Malaysia. In addition to major towns and cities, we see opportunity in bringing the Big Cinemas Lotus Five Star brand and its fine cinematic experience to virgin territories lacking in entertainment infrastructure. We are happy to note the keen enthusiasm for the cinema in the neighbourhood".

Big Cinemas Lotus Five Star Director Dato' Dorai adds: "Kedah has now become quite an attraction to international tourists with a variety of sights, sounds and fun filled outdoor activities and we are contributing to this with the introduction of a cinematic experience that is exceptional."

According to a press release from Big Cinemas Lotus Five Star, up to 12,000 complimentary movie tickets were handed out through flyers and mail drops to residential, commercial and surrounding areas in Kulim for free screenings from 24th November 2009 to 26th November 2009.
