That building is cool. A bit similar to the Civil Justice Centre in Manchester.

ODA gives Stratford City the given green

7 August, 2007

Newham Council and the Olympic Delivery Authority have approved Westfield's development next to the London 2012 site

Stratford City, one of the largest regeneration projects in London, has been given the go ahead by the Olympic Delivery Authority and Newham Council.

The retail-led development, for client Westfield, is adjacent to the London 2012 Olympic site. The scheme, which will also have a residential element, does not include the Olympic Village. This part of the scheme was sold off by Westfield to the ODA last year.

The development, which covers Stratford Town centre, will include 175,000 sq m of retail and leisure space, 106,000 sq m of office space, 34,800 sq m of hotel space as well as 1,224 residential apartments.

Westfield said carbon emissions on the scheme would be initially reduced by 25% against current benchmarks, moving to 50% by 2020 and up to 80% by 2050. The scheme hit the headlines in January after Building revealed that the homes on the scheme would not meet government targets for zero carbon homes by 2016.

John Burton, development director at Westfield, said: “We now move to the next stage of the planning process with planners and stakeholders about the detailed design of all of the proposed buildings for Zone 1.”

Work is expected to start on the scheme next year. It is expected to be open by 2011.

If it can end up like or even nicer than the extension of the Shire shopping centre in Leicester, that will be cool.

The new J. Lewis department store and the Lux cinema look really cool! At least, in the renderings.

thats not a bad thing then, the bullring is cool, this shopping centre needs a multistorey car park as stratford is not at this point a natural choice of shopping destination for many people and alot of people would choose to avoid it altogether rather than use public transport, whether you agree or not that is a reality, and with so much potential for employement and a much needed economic boost to the local area it will need to be as accesible as possible

You can build it underground like the vast majority of european shopping centres. I though land was scarce and expensive in the UK...

This is foul, and very disapointing compared with the original pre multiplex application. This was supposed to be a new urban center - not a shopping mall with a carpark with some cursory housing... They should be thinking Regent Street or Canary Wharf, not Blue Water.

They must have convinced the planners the car park to go into their quota of open public space - maybe it even has a green roof... One thing is for sure, this is not "Barcelona". Anyway, to early to make a final jusdgement, for that I'd like to see the proper plans for the complete Olympic Park and everything around it. On that topic, does anybody know what happened with Ken's masterplan for the complete Lower Lee Valley. I thought that was rather good.

People seem to forget that once the Olympics are out of the way many of the stadia with the exception of the main olympic stadium the velodrome and aquatic centre all the other facilites in the park will be moved to other parts of the country, the media centre will be converted/adapted.Even the Atheletes Village is going to be altered and extend.

It has long been the plan, to leave legacy pieces in the park, but what they have kept quiet about is giving over the remainder to complement the Stratford City developments. Some of the parkland will go to be redeveloped. Even Westfield state the developments at Stratford are long term probably over the next 25 years. Canary Wharf wasn't built in a day, or even a year.

Well they haven't kept it quiet because it's been in the legacy masterplan since day one. Some of the parkland will go, yes, but it will only be either space where the temporary stadia have been dismantled and removed, or areas of the 'concourse' which are thinned out after the Games - much of which will be turned into more parkland after the Games are over.

Westfield Stratford City

Six Westfield staff have left the White City Offices and are now on site to begin initial surveys for the the £4000,000,000 development of the 180-acre site that will provide 1.25 million sq m of new retail, leisure and entertainment facilities, offices, hotels, housing, community facilities, open spaces and over 5,000 dedicated retail car parking spaces next door to London 2012 Olympic Games.
