Good stuff guys. I didn't realise about the redevelopment of the old shopping centre but it can only be a good thing. I also hope the Mayor of Newham accepts the recommendations to return the Broadway to two-way traffic.

Any news on the hotel which was given planning permission on the Broadway?

Does anyone else who lives locally ever sit in the King Eddy pub trying to imagine just how the area will change in the next four or five years - or is it only me? LOL!

See Stratford in a new light
March 04, 2008

Stratford will be lit up as never before over the next three months with a series of light sculptures and illuminations.
Newham Council has commissioned its first artist in residence to work on a number of creations that will illuminate key public spaces and buildings.

French lighting artist Laurent Louyer of Creatmosphere will create a path of light between Stratford station and Theatre Square from 6-12 March to coincide with the East festival. The lighting effects will create a new, welcoming approach to the cultural quarter and bring a new look to Stratford.

On Saturday 8 March expert bell ringers from across east London will be giving demonstrations on The Charmborough Ring, the heaviest portable bell tower currently in existence. This takes place in Theatre Square, Stratford from 12.30 to 2.30pm.

Over the following months there are also plans to light the trees along the Broadway in time for the Torch Relay event on 6 April when the Olympic flame tours Stratford on its way to the Beijing 2008 Games. Using light and sound effects, the result will transform trees into living breathing lungs.

Councillor Conor McAuley, Executive Member for Regeneration, says "We worked with local partners to develop these exciting schemes. These creations will bring a new look to Stratford and continue the transformation of the area in the run up to the London 2012 Games."

Laurent and his company Creatmosphere have created innovative illuminations all over the country and Europe, using the latest low voltage materials which require very little power to create their effects.

The artist will also be working with Active 8 after school club and other local groups to create an installation in Stratford Circus.

For more information about the company, visit www. www.creatmosphere.com or www.breathingtrees.com

Note to Editors

The East festival showcases the best of East London culture in a programme of over 400 events covering fashion, film, food, art, history and performance.

I guess at the moment, it doesn't really exist. It's on the other side of the railway tracks to the existing Stratford town centre. If you climb to the top of the Stratford car park and look out across the railway lines, you'll see a huge area that has been cleared. It's a hive of mechanical activity but with the exception of Stratford International it's pretty much a building site.

In a few years time this huge area will hold the new Westfield Stratford City shopping Centre, the Olympics and Athletes' Village. The shopping centre opens in 2011, Stratford International should open to high speed domestic services to Kent and the DLR about then, too, and the following year, all eyes will be on the Olympics. Eurostar trains (which currently whizz through Stratford International) will also stop there then too.

Once the Olympics are over, the building work continues with the Athletes' Village converted to private and rentable homes, stadiums etc converted to 'legacy' mode, and the next stage of contruction begins... and will probably last about 20 years.

MetroRanger - do you know if the plans for the Stratford Island site/Church Street are definitely going ahead? Is there a timescale? I clicked on your link to the website but couldn't find the maps.

Drinks in the lovely King Eddy - probably won't be able to afford to by then LOL
For those of you not in the know the King Eddy Pub is one of Stratfords few gems.

Sorry Plaistow, the plans were screen-snaps of PDFs you can download them from
http://www.stratford-renaissance.co.uk/current-studies

Island Site Masterplan

The so called Island Site is the land bounded by the Newham Gyratory System and within which the existing Stratford Shopping Centre sits. A significant amount of the land, including the Shopping Centre, is owned by the London Borough of Newham, who in turn has let a long term lease to Land Securities. These two organisations are currently developing proposals to redevelopment this land, which will include the shopping centre and residential development.

The Newham Recorder www.newhamrecorder.co.uk reports that Robert the steam engine has departed the station forecourt to make room for the enlarged ticket hall. It's a shame that the engine couldn't have remained locally. (We would have happily had him in Plaistow!) I guess if the Broadway returns to two-way traffic Malcolm's Robertson's Railway Tree will also be moved. If only they'd move (read demolish) the yellow-framed glass building next to it...

Going loco in Stratford!
10 March 2008
THE train that left Stratford yesterday was.....the eighty-year old steam locomotive that has been resident outside the station entrance as a symbol to the district's historic link to the rail industry.

A steam loco named Robert that has beguiled rail anoraks and commuters over the last eight years, the one time work-horse of the rail-freight system was craned onto a low loader and taken by road to temporary residence at a rail museum in Suffolk.

Its departure makes way for a major expansion of the regional station leading to a bigger ticket area to cope with the tens of thousands of visitors who will flock through the station to attend the 2012 Olympic Games venues in Stratford.

Full story and pictures on this week's Newham Recorder.

Great concept, just imagine strolling through that concrete wasteland in the middle of January ... or February or December or November or March or almost any typical rainy windy grey day. What a stupid idea. What happened to the enclosed areas? Any architect who designs this type of complex should be made to live there for the rest of their hopelessly unimaginative life, it would suit them.

Is it still 13.5 million ft² ? - an earlier post had it cut down to about 3 million.

Stratford City Zone 1 will include Westfield Shopping Centre, some offices and apartments. 200 of the shops will be undercover, as illustrated in the top picture. Some shops, including John Lewis and M&S will have entrances from the street/pedestrianised plazas. I'm not sure if the bridge linking Stratford (old town) and Stratford City will be covered.

The existing bus station will be complemented by a new bus station on the other side of the tracks in Stratford City, plus new entrances to the train station from that side too. And of course there's the DLR at Stratford International and car parks.

From www.skyscrapercity.com (Also includes sixth image pasted above by MetroRanger)

Stratfords Shiny Office Stacks
Published on 2008-03-12 by Skyscrapernews.com

As part of the massive development of Stratford City, 1.2 million square metre project next to the 2012 Olympic site in the London Borough of Newham.

Fletcher Priest Architects has designed a series of new office buildings to act as gateway markers for directly positioned in the manner of points of a triangle to act as a trio of buildings greeting those entering and leaving the Stratford International railway station.

Each of the buildings features several levels stacked upon each other like a rectangular pile of ingots with various cantilevers supporting the jutting out sections of the buildings.

They will be clad in reflective metallic hues, one gold, one silver, and one bronze, creating a solid sheen that makes them truly blocky with little indication of what is going on inside and the reflection of the passing clouds giving them an ever-changing canvas.

The buildings are part of a wider masterplan by Arup Associates and Fletcher Priest Architects for developer Westfield that includes not only offices and retail but also 5,312 new homes including about 3,000 that will be initially the 2012 Olympic Village.

Stratford City and the associated Olympic Campus are the largest development to be undertaken in London since the Barbican was completed in 1979 and in addition to this are dozens of independent projects being carried out along the fringes of the site and Stratford High Street.
