Does anywhen knows when where the M1 (from Brest to the russian border) and the Minsk ring road built as expressways?
Was the Minsk ring built originally as an expressway?
I guess the M1 is quite old.

^ The M1 was built for the Olympic Games in Moscow in the 80's. As for the Minsk ringroad you have everything in Wikipedia.

Thank's!

Do you know if there have been considerable improvements in the M1 after it was opened in the 80's?
I mean improvements like supression of level acceses and things like that (improving the geometry or accesses), not just the usual repaving.

^ Yes, it was converted from a 4-lane road to motorway, although IMO there are some self-made exits.

Hum... the thing is that I need data concerning the total length of the motorway/expressway network in various european countries from 1990 to 1999, (which I got mostly from OECD) for a peoject.
The problem is that I've got no data for Belarus, and as in those dates the only candidate would be M1, I'm not sure if I should coun't it as motorway/expressway or not...

For the Netherlands, you should check here Network development from 1933 until now by each individual year.

I don't think the M1 was officially motorway before, but I don't know when it was converted, perhaps even before 1999 (although I doubt). I don't understand your project though; how can you observe a country's motorway network in some period of time; I'd expect you to do its length e.g. in 1999 (not between 1990 and 1999). Or you're interested in the network, built between 1990 and 1999? Which countries are you working on? Slovenia too?

It's a very cool thing what you are doing, Nephasto. I was thinking on opening a thread about just that, snapshots of the motorway networks in European countries, showing their evolutions year by year.

I hope you will share your project with us!

Yes, slovenia too. 27 european countries.
It's actually a study about freight rail demand... but I need data for roads too.

I want the data for all the years from 1990 to 1999, so that I have a complete data set for each year, and can observe the evolution of the networks, etc...

Yes, a thread about that you be cool!

As I've said, it's not a study about motorways that I'm doing so I'm not focusing on roads.
But I can give you the source of the data I got, as it's public:

I don't know what kind of a definition they have for "motorway", but as far as some countries are concerned, it's a crap. For example, I don't know where they got 569 km of motorways in Slovenia (in 2005), when now we have about 410 km of them and 47 km of 4-lane expressways (2-lane expressways I don't even count). But if you're interested in details, you should really open a new thread, it would be interesting.
