I heard some stories of robberies on Belarussian highways. Is it true that it is so unsafe over there?

i hate claiming like that. what kind of robberies? is it 100% that you'll be robbed? have somebody mentioned that you can be robbed in Germany or Switzerland too?

Truck robbings happens all the time in the Netherlands. They even have decoy-trucks to attract thieves and then send them to a prison as inmates

@x-type: Well, what I heard is that lots of non-Belarussian trucks ride in colonne, because it is way safer. By the way, I wasn't claiming, I was just asking

@Chris: that is always at the rest-areas (what happens in every country). In this case I mean on the highway, outside rest-areas.

I heard stories like that about Ukraine too. Maybe these are outdated stories from the 90's. Urban legends often live a long time

Ukraine has developed much more than Belarus ever since, so I'm not too sure about that. I mean, Belarus has such a nice democratic government that is so good for the Belarussian people.

sry, i was not blaiming you. i am blaiming people who are spreading phobia of traveling in those countries. it is definitely much more pleasant to travel in Germany or Netherlands just because of infrastructure and more available services. idon't think that there are convos in Belarus or Ukraine, but truckers are definitely not sleeping parked lonely somewhere in the middle of nothing, just as in rest of Europe. they are spending nights at service areas which may be guarded. they are present in whole Europe.
definitely the worst thing is bureaucracy at border. i ahve been looking M1 at gogle earth and it surprised me actually with number of service areas and other infrastructure.

That's because the names are not exactly related. Bela-rus means white rus. Kyivan-Rus a predecessor of Ukraine and Belarus. While Russia (Rossiya) doesn't mean anything exactly, it was created in 18th century to replace Russian previous name "Moscovia".

"Belorussia" spelling was created during the USSR to draw a subliminal parallel with Russia, to bring the nations closer together, so to speak.

You can get robbed in Switzerland too. Crime is not that high in Belarus, certainly nowhere near Russia, and I think it's even lower than in Ukraine. The police is very brutal but also more effective in Belarus than in some neighbouring countries.

I heard Ukrainian tourists lately say that Belarusian roads are better maintained or less damaged (much less traffic). I drove to Minsk from Kyiv in the late 90's and didn't really see any difference.

It sounds very strange and is probably not true.

Belarus is a very safe country. It might be backward in terms of economical developments, but the crime rate is lower than that of Ukraine or Russia. Ukrainian drivers say that Belorussian roads are indeed better maintained and that highway patrol does not take bribes. Also, they warned that the road service infrastructure (petrol stations, restaurants, motels, etc) is much less developed than in neighbouring countries.

Yeah, according to my parents Belorussian roads have always been much better than in Ukraine and Russia, even during Soviet times. Perhaps it has something to do with the big heavy industry there, which includes oil refining, or maybe there is no connection. Don't know about anything else though, so can't comment.

Belarus has a quite extensive expressway/motorway network considering the economical and political isolation of the country. There are beltways around most cities (not always motorways) and I believe the only 2-laned part between Amsterdam and Moscow is in Poland.
