State-owned RBS could add Glasgow 2014 to already burgeoning portfolio of sports sponsorships

Coming in the week that political pressure forced RBS chief executive Stephen Hester to turn down a £1.2 million bonus, the start of the Six Nations served as a reminder that the 84 per cent state-owned bank continues to channel £20 million into the tournament.

The bank is in the third year of a four-year deal, and its group logo “RBS Group” was painted mid-pitch at Murrayfield and the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, where its Irish division Ulster Bank was also painted behind the try-line.

At the time the deal was struck in 2009, after the £45 billion state bail-out, RBS said: “The RBS Six Nations sponsorship has been selected to meet very specific business objectives within the six competing nations.”

And despite public unease over the management of the bank, RBS could add to its sponsorship list, with a deal to partner the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games under active consideration.

Glasgow 2014 is desperately seeking credible sponsors in a depressed market, and the signing of a major bank, albeit one dependent on the taxpayer, would be a major boost.

For RBS the calculation about whether to proceed will be complicated not only by public opinion, but also the political baggage likely to accompany the Games.

With SNP leader Alex Salmond scheduling an independence referendum for autumn 2014, the Commonwealth Games are likely to be used by both devolutionists and their opponents as a platform.

Even with the addition of Glasgow 2014, the list of RBS-backed events will not be as lavish and indulgent as when Fred Goodwin was in charge and gave the green light to sponsorship of the Williams F1 team, and a roster of “ambassadors” including Jack Nicklaus and Sir Jackie Stewart.

The high point of Goodwin’s indulgence came at the 2005 Open at St Andrews, when RBS printed £5 notes with Nicklaus’s image on them.
Unfortunately for him it made no difference to his campaign to gain R&A membership, which was quietly blackballed once the bank collapsed.

Not really sure how I would be able to get to Hampden Park for the public display, but I'm sure somebody on here will keep us up to date, quite interested to see what they actually plan on doing with this extension, and if it will be built to be future proof, and allow them a suitable platform to build a North Stand upper tier should they ever wish to add the extra 15,000 seats that would allow the Champion's League to come back to Glasgow.

Strathclyde Police drop probe over Commonwealth land deals
Commonwealth Games

Police have completed inquiries into multi-million pound land deals linked to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after finding no criminality.

James Dornan, SNP MSP for the Cathcart, had asked Strathclyde Police to look into the matter.

He had claimed that public money may have been misused in some deals.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "Police inquiries were carried out in relation to this matter and there was no criminality established."

She added: "Our inquiries are now completed in relation to this matter."

Mr Dornan asked for the land deals to be investigated in October, when he wrote to Strathclyde Chief Constable Stephen House and Scotland's Auditor General Robert Black.

A spokeswoman for Audit Scotland confirmed that the public spending watchdog received a request from Mr Dornan to look at the deals.

She added: "We do not have responsibility for the audit of Clyde Gateway, we do not have direct access to this organisation."

She said Mr Dornan had been advised to take his concerns to the relevant bodies.

Mr Dornan said he was satisfied with Strathclyde Police's response but had felt he had no other option but to raise concerns.

Glasgow City Council said the matter had been reported to the executive committee in the normal manner and approved by councillors.

Like I said at the time, nothing more than a political stunt. People like that should be embarrassed by their conduct. Trying to tarnish the reputation of those involved, with absolutely no evidence, is pathetic. I doubt this MSP had any interest in the outcome of any investigation, the headlines which they instigated will already have casued the desired damage.

Wasn't that friendly old bloke who runs Rangers heavily involved in all of these deals? Clean as a whistle this one! What a waste of time!

I think if you go back a few pages there are some details - its more of a 'diddy' platform to provide additional floor space at the back of the north stand.

Threre is plenty of room to build an upper tier but I think as some people have pointed out the cost would be prohibitive - the roof would need reconfigurated etc. Its a pity that the SFA/QPFC couldn't get £50m for further development of Hampden but all the money has been spent on the Olympics............white elephants etc. etc.

No, it wasn't Paul Clarke or David Whitehouse of Duff and Phelps.

Walked past the NISA & Velodrome tonight and down the EERR after the football. The changes in this part of the City are immense in such a relatively small time. The landscaping around the venue is coming along nicely and the EERR looks almost complete, just a few loose ends to tie up and it'll be done.

Agreed. Add to that the big improvements at Bridgeton and along London Road and you can see the area is really on the up.

Anyone got an idea when they will be building the 6 new squash courts out at Scotstoun which will be used during the games? I hear they will be housed in an extension to the national badminton academy, but I can't think where on the site they will go without losing some of the existing football and tennis facilities. Anyway, the city badly needs more squash courts - Glasgow Club now only has 1 court (at Bellahouston) across all of its facilities and its almost impossible to get a booking on it.

They had the proposals on display in Scotstoun a while ago now, but the proposal builds infront of the Badminton Academy, over the circular parking bays and links up with the main builing where the Fitness Suite is now.

Scotstoun Stadium & Sports Centre Table tennis and squash

Located in the Western Venue Cluster, Scotstoun will host the table tennis and squash events during the Games.

Already a major athletics venue and home to the National Badminton Academy, Scotstoun is due for significant upgrading and modernisation between now and 2014.

The existing tennis courts will be transformed into the table tennis arena and new squash courts will be built. This venue is already famous for the atmosphere it generates during competitions, with our planned upgrades, this will only get better.

As with all of our venue plans, Scotstoun will provide a magnificent setting for the Games, and a sustainable legacy for our community.
