Nice to see they're pertaining to the same 90's style lamps hanging from the ceilings, but with a modern twist.

Thanks a ton for everything.

Is it just me, or do many of the older RER A stations seem very dingy and dark. Even the ones that were designed as "cathedrals" are shadowy.

The new RER E stations, on the other hand, are beautiful to behold.

What's the difference? Lighting? Paint? Age/cleanliness? Can the old stations be brightened up somewhat?

AFAIK there is no level crossing on the RER, apart from the rural parts in the south of RER B, C and D. You can check http://carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/rer-idf.

Mostly age and cleanliness. Underground water has been infiltrating many stations, and the RATP doesn't really bother to clean its stations. Most of the RER A stations in the central part are to be renovated though. Charles de Gaulle - Etoile has been lightly renovated a few months ago, it looks a lot better.

Well you have a broad view of rural. In my view an area full of little houses, malls, industrial estates is called suburban.
Chevreuse valley where is located the only level crossing on the RER B is suburban.
On the RER C, Longjumeau, Chilly Mazarin and etc are not rural but suburban.
This is the same for many level crossings on the south of the RER D.

For the RER A station design, don't forget that those were built in the end of 1960's and 1970's.
One of the worst period for aesthetic.

Charles-de-Gaulle - Etoile and Auber on the RER A will be renovated from 2017. And obviously Châtelet-les-Halles will be completed in 2016.

Anyway what's goin' on with Nanterre-Université ? Any recent news or pictures about the end of the refurbishment ?

Will RER A5 continue to run once E is extended?

What will happen to the Transilien J?

Might they re-route that line that terminates at La Defense to Gare Saint Lazare?

The RER A will not change, the RER E will act as an express service between Nanterre and Poissy, there is just one stop at Houilles – Carrières-sur-Seine.
The Transilien J Mantes-la-Jolie to Paris Saint-Lazare by Poissy services will be suppressed.

They are building a new passangers hall.

You can also see the construction of the new development (coeur de quartier) behind the station.

Exactly, the area around the station will change.
You can see that the track of Cergy/Poissy branch will be covered by new buildings.

The south side of Nanterre Université station will no longer be a no man's land.
The 30,000 students of Nanterre University had no place to enjoy, eat or shop around the University, except going to La Defense located three stations away.
All the redevelopment in the area will lead to a pedestrian friendly environment from here to La Défense.

I don't know.
In my opinion at the very end of 2015 or after.
The picture that I posted in the last page is just one week old.

Construction stages of Nanterre Université

By suppressed, do you mean eliminated, or reduced in frequency?

Eliminated, all the J service between Mantes - La Jolie to Saint-Lazare by Poissy will be replaced by the RER E.
The frequency on this route will increase.
