I presume the "express" services along the new S-Bahn tunnel are mostly former DB Regio routes, just using S-Bahn stock and routed through the S-Bahn tunnel?

And what is the ridership on the S1 branch to the airport anyway? Looks redundant to keep it if there's the S8 and express S23X...

S1 is pretty useful for those traveling to the airport from the western or northern parts of the city. Last time I went to Munich I was staying next to Hohenzollernplatz, so the combination U2 to Feldmoching + S1 was by far the most convenient way to reach the airport. And the trains weren't empty by any means, as a matter of fact I couldn't find an empty seat on the S1 train.

München unveils metro and tram expansion strategy
16 Jan 2018

GERMANY: Long-term plans for the expansion of München’s U-Bahn and tram networks have been outlined by the city government, following an agreement between the SPD and CSU political parties.

The €5·5bn package unveiled by Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter and Mayor Josef Schmid on January 11 reflects rising demand for public transport as the city continues to grow. Described by Reiter as ‘a historically unique expansion offensive’, it envisages the construction of four new sections of U-Bahn and three tram routes totalling almost 40 km. This would increase the urban rail network by around 20% ‘over the coming decades’, although a funding package has yet to be agreed

Munich already had one of the best public transport networks in Europe, now it's still expanding! Very impressive!
