Surely that would have to cost the developer heaps of dollars as penalty, but is the penalty still small in comparison to the overall money raked in and therefore they go in hook, line and sinker?

Ahh, so that's why King George Central has been going up pretty quickly! Isn't it supposed to be completed by August or something?

Have to say, I'm more than a little disappointed...no Southpoint and Grocon's "Stumpy 2.0" possibly going ahead on Queen St. Not the best for either site.

Today's Courier Mail was saying this is still a goer, but with a new twin tower plan. Which probably means shorter. Both around 20,000 sqm.

I'm sorry some think of the RNA buildings as dirty but to have where you spend your life demolished is not nice. However, the development is an excellent idea so bring on more development. Fence sitting - meh - can't do anything about it anyway.
I am against selling off RNA land/buildings for redevelopment. Once it is gone, it is gone. Anything Strata (eg. Apartments) especially so, nearly impossible to knock down or move on. Apartments generally aren't as well upkept as commercial properties and neighbours may be pesky with noise complaints.

Disappointed enough in loosing the Chair Lift. It was awesome. Hotel and office space, if retained by RNA, perhaps not the end of the world, but the temptations would be there.

Same goes for Doomben and Albion Park (but moreso Doomben). NO SELL OFF. I would join a NIMBY rally to save Doomben.

The thing with the RNA selloff was that the RNA was saddled with a number of inefficient and ageing structures, some of which were decrepit to the point of becoming unusable/unsuitable, and they simply didn't have the funds to do anything about it. The only real option they had open to them was the one they took: consolidation of the showgrounds site and sale of the extremities for redevelopment. It's not a bad decision really. Not only has it allowed the RNA to fund new, modern pavilions such as the new RICC (Industrial Pavilion) and the proposed Fresh Food Market, but is allowing for a total refurbishment of the site as a whole, which in some parts, would be very welcome. I think that the new exhibition space they gain through more efficient, multi-level pavilions will offset the land they give up around the extremities.

That said, Albion and Doomben are completely different kettles of fish... If there is a demonstrated need for renewal of the sites, fair enough, but flogging them off as a cash grab is not something I want to see. I'd probably join you in the NIMBY rally for that one.

It's about balance. I do agree with your points. I do agree that the showgrounds needs an overhaul and that is happening anyway. I know many hate fence sitting but some of the ideas for the RNA are great. Having said that the Dog Pavilion should have stayed, it's history being eliminated but having worked in construction designers have no morality or respect of the past only money. Look at the disgraceful Village Twin situation. But on the other hand if apartments make the RNA stay for the rest of my life, so be it.

I am not in favour of a supertrack so protest away. I think Doombin and/or Eagle Farm should be renovated. Just my view.

With Southpoint I can see why many favour it, but again blowing smoke up people on here, it seems some on here should be in charge of it as their ideas and views make more sense than some of the things I have heard about it's proposed developments from people on other forums outside of this one. One suggested huge skyscrapers there one or two ok but 9

FORTITUDE Valley's Emporium Hotel is set to be replicated at South Bank.

Details of the development, by Anthony John Group, will be released soon.

The group's CEO Shane Bulloch remained tight-lipped about the construction's starting date, but said the hotel would be built on the corner of Tribune and Grey streets.

"We'll have a lot more to say in just a few months," Mr Bulloch said. "We are looking at a higher-standard boutique hotel this is something positive for Brisbane."

Meanwhile, the Valley's Emporium Hotel has won two national awards.

The independently owned hotel was named Best Boutique Hotel in Australia for the fourth time at the Hospitality Management Awards for Excellence in Sydney. It also received the Best Deluxe Hotel, 5-Star+ at the 2012 Queensland Hotels Association Awards for Excellence.

New images

There is quite a bit of new info on the www.lastpieceofsouthbank.com website, including new images showing two separate structures:
