Kappa21, historyworks:
I agree, the picture is very probably from 50's. ---------- Kappa21, historyworks, Fidel Castro: I am currently against metro in Brno. 1. It is supposed to cost more, than the city can afford. Especially, if you consider all the expensive public projects which are planned for next decade (new railway station including reurbanization of the whole Brno-South sector, city road circle, western by-pass highway, football stadium for 30 k...). 2. Brno has very densy, well covered, well connected and relatively well working network of electric public transport (trams + trolley-buses) not only compared to Bratislava or other central european cities of that size but even in world scale. The network may just get developed. Yes, there are some critical transit points in the city, however, solvable without a necessity of a metro. 3. Tram lines towards Brno's largest living areas (commie block districts of Lisen, Bystrc and Bohunice+Liskovec) have been, if I wink at it, kind of fast-trams since they were found in the 70's and 80's - no collision tram lines without road crossings and without traffic lights. You go max. 25 minutes from commie blocks suburbs to the center. There is definitely a good occasion for a tram tunnel between Mendlovo namesti and Komenskeho namesti in central Brno (help to Silingrovo namesti transition point). Maybe a tram tunnel line from the center towards developing Kralovo Pole district, but these places are not problematic enough to deal with starting such a huge project as metro is. Btw. Prague was 1.1 mil. when the metro was founded in 1974, Brno balances on a 0.37 mil. population since 1980 and eventual development is considered to pass 0.4 tiny; not more (yes there are more cars on street than in 70's but still...) I live in a city which has about 300 000 people...and we really don't need metro... I hope that is going to be built, because i am going to come to Brno for university...

. I think you are right, it does not necessarily need a metro. The tram+trolley+bus system works quite well... And, answering your hopes, the metro (if any) will not be finished on the date you are coming for university ... Btw. as a metro fanatic you probably know Brno is 120 km from Vienna, 210 km from Prague and 340 km from Budapest .Are you coming in September? |

Kragujevac has it's name from the name of the bird which lived here (KRAGUJ),and Kragujevac means Kraguj's place... Basicly name is not special... Our two cities are prety similar by many criteriums, but Brno is much more developed (naturely because of EU,and we had wars and everything...)... I wrote on one of Serbian threads how the future airport in Kragujevac should look like and i wrote Tuřany,so i got it right ![]() ![]() ![]() You probably don't know anything about Kragujevac, but i will learn you

^ I know something about Kragujevac, cause my father bought Zastava 1100 which is from Kragujevac factory (Rydy prapor I think) in 70's, it was great car, better than Škoda and our family used it till the end of 80's. We still have it in garage :-)

Zastava Factory is being sold to Fiat... And Volkswagen and Opel want to open their factories in Kragujevac... Kragujevac is developing, and it's going to become a leader in South-East Europe in Car industry... |

Yes,Kraguj is Krahujec in Czech... So,the basic translation of Kragujevac on Czech is Krahujevac...Many Serbian cities have logic names (Belgrade(Belehrad)-White city,Kraljevo - Kingstown,Novi Sad- New Sad) I am so glad that some people know something about this city... ![]() ![]() ![]() From where does tha name "Brno" derives? I really don't know, and i would like to know... |

I liked Brno, I was there. Along with Prague and Karlovy Vary is one of the Czech jewels. But do you really need to build such underground line for middle sized city? When I was there transportation system looked well for me.

I was asking the same...
It seems they have enough to take care of themselves.. but i was there only in the city center and there other areas seem to be also packed..so its interesting debate... I passed through Brno this summer on my way back to Prague from Bratislava I wish i just went to Brno instead of making a uturn in Bratislava.... Brno had so much fun! |

mdka:
Yes, there is a significant population of Brno which does not belong under official population statistics, but - as everywhere else ( I would say it can be even more than 450 k). Bratislava has a metro project, but will not realize it until let's say 2040 (with closed to 100% probability). sales_kg: Hehe. Well, rather "Krahujice", "Krahujevice" eventualy "Krahujec" itself, but not Krahujevac. There can be -ice, -ec, -íč/-eč endings in Czech, but not -ac, it does not exist in Czech; unlike in Serbian or Croatian. |
