Hong Kong 2007 - Part 35 (Living in Kwun Tong)

Another beautiful weekend prompted a long walk under the sun. This time I chose Kwun Tong, one of the dirty industrial towns on the southeast side of Kowloon. It has made the headlines lately with a couple of large redevelopments that will transform the town centre and make it an emerging secondary business district. A new cruise terminal will soon start construction just off the coast at the former Kai Tak airport runway tip.

1. apm is now a very successful new mall, topped by a skyscraper that bears the Bank of East Asia's name.

2. But to be honest I wouldn't live here even if it were free.

7. Some of the streets around the town square are fairly run-down, but the streets are still very vibrant with the likes of the average working class people wandering about.

17. I repeat ... I won't live here even if it's free.

20. But walk out a few more blocks and the mood changes. The buildings suddenly looked cleaner, with a few more trees and spacing.

25. This looks like a very old type of public housing - a midrise!

32. On the other side of the street, the buildings don't look so bad. The street itself is fairly quiet with minimal traffic. Quite a surprise considering it's Kwun Tong.

So where are the dirty industrial buildings? They're on the other side of the tracks, where there are a couple of surprising new developments that have popped up from nowhere. That'll be the next part.
