I find it amazing (and appalling) to see that NY is home to so many NIMBYs...?
I mean... Man-*******-hattan!!! Why in the world would you be there if you're not pro-skyscraper?!
Is that some really twisted and sick form of sadomasochism?
Did their mommy torment them with lego buildings during their childhood?

They can **** right off.

Sorry, but it does my head in...

Similar story somewhere else...

What a bummer...

It will be sad if this Jean Nouvel masterpiece is cancelled.

More often than not, anti-development movement is not exactly as selfless as what they want us to believe. In most cases, their opposition is driven by their fear of changes, and the prospect of having to adapt to a brand new environment full of new unfamiliar faces. Such resistance usually occurs in a mature, gentrified neighbourhood.

Resistant movement like this is not uniquely New York problem. Earlier post spoke of similar opposition in Holland. Just to broaden your perspective, I would like to share with you a similar incidence in my country Malaysia, where an anti development movement managed to put on-hold a proposed multi-billion dollar urban development project in the northern state of Penang. The project is called 'Penang Global City Center' (PGCC), and it was designed by Asymptote Architect, a New York- based firm who won it through competition.

(renders taken from Malaysian branch of SSC)

While a formal cancellation announcement is yet to be made, nobody believe that the project will get through in the wake of a fierce opposition mounted by the anti-PGCC movement, mainly comprised of environmentalist NGOs and a bunch of old, but wealthy retirees that currently resides at the PGCC periphery.

I can never understand the reason behind the resistant. Malaysia is not a developed country, and Penang is not exactly world renowned. Project like this, if implemented, will lift the international profile of this backwater state in the same way that Guggenheim Museum made Bilbao famous.

Please excuse me for swaying away from the MOMA expansion topic. I just need a place to vent my frustration. Geographically, we may be different. It may appear unreasonable to compare the plight of a small city like Penang against the might and sophistication of a global city like New York, but I think at the end of the day, our predicament is still the same.

Well, Malaysia has some extremely impressive strutures that would fool anyone into thinking it was a highly developed country (i.e, KL airport, Petronas towers). The airport design puts many in europe and the america to shame.

yes, i do...

Anyways, I'm hoping there's new renders showing the way it will light up at night. I think the lighting will be one of the more amazing aspects of this building. They described it as "blood flowing through the building's vains". Now thats should be amazing.

btw, Obviously i don't think anyone will mind. Why even ask that? lol

I agree that it will be a veritable crime against humanity if this isn't built. People who are in the area should perhaps become proactive in a way that makes those resisting this feel like they are in a decisive minority. In my experience NIMBY's are usually only bold when they have either direct financial incentives or when they actually believe they are acting in the interest of the neighborhood minority. Take away those pillars of support, in this case the belief that the neighborhood backs them, and they tend to become quite timid.

Not a cruel intention

I m sorry.. It was not my intention to sway this discussion from MOMA.

I just can't help but to draw a similar comporasion between the plights of MOMA and our very own PGCC. Both projects have unconventional design that made traditionalists uneasy, and both of them challenged the idea of how a skyscraper shoud look like.

When people felt threatened, they made lame excuses and abuses our tolerance towards dissenting voices. But you are still luck that your MOMA did not end up (or at least not for now) being cancelled like our own PGCC.

Once again, my apology for putting up the PGCC story.

Now back to MOMA.
