the location of this tower would have made a spine almost like bostons back bay, where it would have been this tower the esb and the freedom tower all sticking out in a row. From a distance these three spired towers would have looked amazing and shown the beginning middle and end of the skyline. Now its roof height is basically the same as the bank of america tower and the boa's spire will be taller so it wont stand out as much.

I doubt there are any NIMBY's on this forum, all of us want this tower built.

We can disagree with one another, but lets be civilized about it.

At least the height cut isn't detrimental to the design. It's basically like they ended up getting what they wanted in the first place.

Nouvels MoMA Tower Approved.

Jean Nouvel's much debated proposal for a skyscraper to stand adjacent to the Museum Of Modern Art in New York City has been approved by the local planning authorities following a protracted battle by opponents.

The end design that's been approved by the city council of New York will stand at 82 storeys, and 320 metres in height. Although this makes it just over 1 metre taller than the Chrysler Building, it represents a substantial reduction from the scale the tower was once proposed at which saw it come in at 381 metres however it's still seven floors taller than the first proposal that officially surfaced in 2007.

The scheme is officially called Tower Verre. Overlooking 53rd and 54th Streets, the lobby of the building links the two together via a bridge running through it whilst the building itself will serve partly as an extension to MoMA in excess of 6,000 square metres, but also as a luxury hotel with the upper floors boasting some of the Big Apple's most expensive condos.

MoMA originally owned the site but they sold it on to one of American's biggest property companies Hines for $125 million at the peak of the market in 2007, a financially astute move for the museum. Despite no longer owning the site one of the terms of sale was that they would retain a veto over whatever was proposed, meaning that Nouvel's high-tech piece of glass and cross-braced steel comes with the their approval.

great news!!

i seem to be the only one who loves the fact that the height was reduced!

i always though this tower was WAY too tall.. IMO it would have looked out of place.. it wouldnt have fit in at all!!

This tower reminds me of Daniel Libeskind's early designs for Freedom Tower. Very unique.

Me like...

This will be apart of the Midtown trifecta, Chrysler, Empire and Verre will make people go 's.

Great! So it's more likely now to see this masterpiece come true. Can't wait!

Btw. I remember a masterplan of the early 80's (printed in a German magazin) with a tall tower called "The Needle" just across the street, but that project didn't make it... does anybody know more about that one? So the "Nouvel-needle" is quasi the second attempt for a super-slim tower on 53rd street between 5th and 6th Avenue.

Btw. if we can 100% trust skyscrapernews.com, the thread title can be changed to
NEW YORK | Tower Verre | 320m | 1049ft | 82 fl | App

There no supertalls being built in NYC outside of 1WTC. Beekmen is growning 4WTC is street level. Anything else is a myth.

The render always show a building was 1150 feet tall. And they never change them even when they add 100 feet.
