They can't cry about penns height, when ESB down the street. ESB site the standard in that area. This building will be the tallest for blocks around.

To me, it all seems a bit silly to cut the tower by 200ft when ther still is 1000-something left... Both versions are really tall.

It certainly is.

Unlike projects like the Chicago Spire which required pricing WAY beyond what was ever yielded in the local market, this project will procure pricing within normal limits for very high-end NY projects (i.e., $3,000-$5,000/sf). Thus, it's a very viable project. Moreover, the developer has invested a lot of money in the site (e.g., air rights, etc.). Lastly, the developer is a major international developer -- not a fly-by-night one.

I'm certainly right.

If the recovery picks up steam in 2011, it likely will start then. If the recovery derails due to, among other things, a terrorist attack or the default on sovereign debt by an EU nation, then it could take a few years before it starts. As noted, however, this is a perfectly viable project, unlike -- for example -- the Spire. Moreover, a lot of money and time has been invested in it; it has full city approval; and it is being proposed by a major international development company.

Tower Plan Clears Hurdle

By KATE TAYLOR;
Compiled by DAVE ITZKOFF
September 21, 2010

Quote:
One obstacle to construction of a tower designed by Jean Nouvel next to the Museum of Modern Art has been removed. Justice O. Peter Sherwood of State Supreme Court in Manhattan last week rejected a petition by nearby residents to have the project’s approvals by the City Council and the New York City Planning Commission overturned.

The petitioners — two local residents’ associations (the West 54-55 Street Block Association and the Coalition for Responsible Midtown Development) and three individual residents — oppose the planned tower, which is to include a hotel, residential apartments and space for the museum, on the ground that it would be too tall for the neighborhood.

In his decision Justice Sherwood said the Council and the Planning Commission had not acted irrationally or arbitrarily, as the petitioners had charged. Before approving it, the Planning Commission required that the tower’s height be reduced to 1,050 feet from 1,250 feet.

There should be a petition to overturn the height reduction.

The good news is that the developers won a recent court victory which dismissed this frivilous lawsuit. With the dollar low (thereby attracting foreign buyers) and Wall Street booming, I expect a ground breaking before the end of 2011.

for many people here on SSC it's all about height, height and height! no matter how fugly a tower might be (no offense to dubai, but it would be the prime example), as long as it is tall, it has to be great. being tall + having a great design + the impact on the skylne; well that's the real deal. just look at shanghai tower - great height and lovely design!

PS: some forumers don't even care about buildings under 1,000 feet which is very sad...
