Nouvel tower looks ultra futuristic and organic at the same time. The triangular framing really helps the look, but will be awesome if it's actually structural.

Please Don't Screw Up the Jean Nouvel MoMA Tower
After French starchitect Jean Nouvel's design for a new 75-story mixed-use skyscraper next to the Museum of Modern Art first exploded onto the scene via a celebratory announcement penned by New York Times archicritic Nicolai Ouroussoff, silence reigned. It's almost as if a nuclear bomb went off at 53 West 53rd Street, and now, months later, the survivors are regrouping. And those survivors aren't necessarily happy about the attack. The Observer's Eliot Brown reports that a Community Board 5 subcommittee unanimously voted against the air rights transfers last week, with a full board vote to come on Thursday. These votes are essentially meaningless, because it will be the Landmarks Preservation Commission, City Planning Commission and City Council that will ultimately make the call. But dudes, c'mon. "The scale is just totally inappropriate in a low-rise area," argued the vice president of the block association by the site. Um hello, it's Midtown! A world-class architect wants to drop an instant landmark onto 53rd Street, and people fight it. Yeesh, no wonder Dubai has supplanted New York as the skyscraper capital of the world.

I can't believe the NIMBY'S plan on blocking this project! An online petition has been started by a fellow skyscraper enthusiats on wirednewyork.com. You can also e-mail Community Board 5 and let them hear about the travesty they will create if they halt this project. They can't even come up with a valid reason to block the proposal. I don't want to see this project dissolve like so many others. Hopefully, you feel like we do about this beauty. Let our voices be heard, SkyscraperCity!

Write them at:

office@cb5.org

Here's the online petition:

http://www.petitiononline.com/53West53/petition.html

It only takes a few minutes of your time. Thank you in advance.

Does that dude realize he lives in NYC? I hate these morons that are anti skyscrapers. I mean, c'mon, I can understand your retarded mentality if it's Central or Eastern Europe... but to be against such a beautiful skyscraper in Manhattan... now that's some high quality pot you must be smokin'.

Idiots aside... Nouvel Tower looks just and I hope I'll see it get built ASAP.

P.S.: have signed the petition, though I'm not too big on online petitions, 'cause they probably end up nowhere, but we'll see.

If anyone doesn't like this fantastic new skyscaper in New York tell them to move to Oklahoma..not in a city...just a wide open plain...wont be able to hear them from there either.... ( could have used same argument when plans for ESB were announced....)Looks like NIMBY's are everywhere!!!!!!!

look at the middle picture ...that would suit even the lowest of low rise areas! its uniqueness makes it ok to stand out...

Please, sign the petition. Let the voice of the world also be heard. We NYers need the online community to ban together with us.

I might actually be sad if this doesn't happen. I think the statement made on the 14th page of that link boosts the chances. Reading that I think how can they lose with the Nimbys when they're going to go green, respect the desire for light without shadows, and would do a great justice for that church. The line about it feeling like a giant tree or tree house inside sounds really neat.

Check out the 10th shot...doesn't it really resemble 70 Pine?

Now lets see if it can endure the economic downturn.

I think it's a good example of "European style" skyscraper in North America. It really has a very different personality than other projects. Even the Chicago spire is designed by a European and yet it doesn't have that feeling projects on the old world have.

Some other cool projects by Nouvel in his birthplace:

I assume you're talking of Nouvel's website. There are stuffs he did I like and some I'm much less sensitive. I hope that Tour de Verre will be built in NY, not just because of the architect but it would really bring some fresh air not just to NY but to the whole country.

I totally agree and would like to add that it really fits NY and in a way the building itself kinda "screams ny". As some have been saying lately.
I hope it does get built and that the lighting scheme really does look like blood flowing through veins.
