I'm doing Cape Town to Durban in December via the N1, N5 and N3 - just over 1,600 km. Splitting this one into two days.

Is that faster than via N2?

It's a lot faster (yes, I've driven both), even though the distances are similar. The inland route is generally pretty straight and flat, whereas the N2 is a bit of a rollercoaster in some places. You can't beat the N2 on scenic beauty though.

(Of course, this will all change once the Wild Coast toll road eventually gets built.)

Main reason for choosing the inland route is that I'll be taking my roadtrip-hating sister with me, and she just wants the drive to be done with as soon as possible!

The longest I´ve ever driven (switching places with my friends so we could make it in a shortest amount of time) was approx. 4000km between Madrid and Moscow And just a few days after we came from Moscow to London (approx. 3000km) and then from London to Prague which is about 1000km. It was incredible, about 8000km

Logan Utah to Chicago Illinois USA

I can't beat many of you, but I think my trip, with a buddy in the dead of winter, is still memorable:

Logan, UT to Chicago USA
1,393 miles
2,242 km
28 hours

My solo personal best was Sandpoint, Idaho, USA to Wilsonville, Oregon (Fry's Electronics) and return in one day:
886 miles
1,426 km

It was a long day.

Escher, your journey start in Uruguay and stop in Paraguay or Brazil. How comes that?

It started and ended in Rio. I made this map a time ago, I don't remember why I plotted only outside Brazil.

I think southern South America is one of the most underrated parts of the world to do a road trip. Everyone thinks of Australia or Canada / United States, but Chile and Argentina are quite developed with a large road network with very large distances. I'd rather do (as a foreigner) a road trip in Chile / Argentina than Peru / Colombia / Brazil.

I agree with you! Argentina, Chile and Uruguay structure concerning roads and services are very well developed. Southern Brazil has also a good level of services but the main problem is the main arteries are normally clogged or under heavy road works, making sometimes the drive tiring and unpleasant.

I'm now in practices, so I'm boosting my longest distance driven. As of today, it's 28.2 kilometers: http://g.co/maps/bvtre

Are you trying to break this thread record? I'm just joking, everybody was driving short distances at the beginning. Good luck with your practice!

ontopic: last Friday I've done my record distance driving: about 810 km in 9 hours (including stops). It was a long ride since I was the only driver.

A so long trip to end in a ugly, grey, anonymous industrial town?

i had just a short bussines meeting there. i should have been going to Udine, but due to some circumstances we have met there, exchanged what we had to exchange and that was it. going down to Trieste would just be waste of time, although i had a heartache not going there
