Terengganu to push for bullet train network

Terengganu to push for bullet train network
Friday November 16, 2007
TheStar

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government hopes to lobby its Federal counterpart to review the former’s proposal for a bullet train network in the Eastern Corridor Economic Region (ECER) masterplan.

State Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Communications Committee chairman Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh said the state was disappointed upon learning that the proposal was overlooked when the ECER masterplan was unveiled.

“Hopefully, the proposal will be reviewed to complement the development plan,” he said after taking nine orphans aged between three and nine on a shopping spree at the newly-opened Giant Hypermarket here recently.

Wan Hisham said the bullet train proposal was to link Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur.

Under the proposal, the train was to link Kuala Terengganu, Dungun, Kerteh, Kemaman and several towns in Pahang before reaching KL Sentral.

Such link can halve the travel time from Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Lumpur, which currently takes seven to eight hours by trunk roads.

The train can travel at between 200 and 320 km/h, depending on the track and train specifications.

Wan Hisham said the state had identified the areas the track would pass through if the project was approved.

KUANTAN, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Travel by train from Kuala Lumpur to this Pahang capital will be faster than by road by 2015 if a high-speed train service between the two destinations becomes a reality.

This is part of a proposal in the National Physical Plan to turn Kuantan into the eastern region's main conurbation centre, said Director-General of Town and Country Planning, Peninsular Malaysia, Datuk Mohd Fadzil Mohd Khir.

He said the proposal would be implemented under four-core development projects of the Kuantan District Locality Plan 2004-2015.

"Travel time for cargo and passenger trains will be shortened when the service is commissioned," he said at the publicity campaign of the draft of the Kuantan District Locality Plan launched by Johor Local Government and Environment Committee Chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, here Tuesday.

The text of Mohd Fadzil's speech was read out by the Deputy Director-General I Kamalruddin Shamsudin.

Mohd Fadzil said the plan also spelt out sustainable conservation of sensitive environmental areas including forest reserves, coastal areas, swampy land, natural lakes and hilly areas in the town.

He said the plan proposed to gazette the turtle landing area in Cendur as a national turtle sanctuary and to develop the former Sungai Lembing mine as a tourist attraction.

The public is invited to comment on the draft prepared by the Kuantan Municipal Council. It will be displayed for one month.

The poverty rate in the east coast is still huge..i don't think the local people can afford to take bullet train as the main tranportation unless the government subsidize 90% of the cost.

Population (absolute number, density) is also a factor for any rail project and this one is no exception.....

Also, the expansion of the KT airport and the LPT, wouldn't that make the plan for HSR less feasible?

Terengganu doesn't need Bullet train... but it needs normal train service which runs between 120-150 km/h . Same as Kuantan .

I too thought if a 200-300kmph train service was necessary. A lot of other things can be done to help the population before they need a bullet train service.

[sarcasm] If so, why not look at Maglev. Can push the travel time ever lower eh? [/sarcasm]

I dunno...Im starting to like the way they are thinking....

first, state-wide public transportation, now HSR :p

Maybe they have realized that they are flush with money but most of it is going to the federal government...and but they would rather see it spent it back in Terengganu...

Yes, improved air links are a big deal, but public transportation is still necessary at the beginning and the end of the trip....

And in fact, we can stretch the definition of public transportation (ie a vehicle that is not owned by a private individual, used for the transportation of multiple passengers on a "fixed" route system....we can say that airlines are a form of public transportation...with "sky high" prices... (pardon the pun)...

When we get down to earth, we realize that public transportation is still necessary even with air links...do you want travellers to be stuck using taxies???

Hmmmmm....HSR by Malaysian standards...maybe not 200-300 km/h but still getting better and better...

If only other states were as keen on rail and public transportation....

Cheers, m

I think instead of using the money to build the train... why not use those ringgit in improving the life of citizens there, build whatever necessary to prevent flood during monsoon...

Why do you need a highspeed train when the service may be not functional when there's flood... solve the problem before you create another one...

They talking rubbish and nonsense ...this project not feasible and if they really want to build HSR please start with JB/Nusajaya to KL, and soon after that KL-Butterworth..

From now on, with current state of country financial, building EDT in East Coast and connect to Klang Valley is more than enough...
