The crazy maniac that I am, I've just roamed through my pictures of September and October and found 85(!!!) pictures of trams, underground trains, suburban trains, busses and regional trains.
I merely post them to transport the atmosphere of travelling through Vienna, as they are pretty random and in no geographical or any other order. I will, however, write a line or two for every picture.

Westbahnhof, Vienna's second biggest train station and a major hub for S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and regional trains.

Two trams (type E1) of line 49 and 9 on Schweglerstraße in the 15th district.

What it's like to sit in the first row of an c1 car. Line 49 on Urban-Loritz-Platz.

Line 6, type B, a first generation low-floor car near Reumannplatz.

Looking along Favoritenstraße (10th district) with two sets of line 67 (configuration: E2/c2) and a bus (line 65A)

Oberlaa-bound train of line 67 in a typical E2/c2 config arriving at Reumannplatz, which is also the terminus of U1.

Inside a bus on the line 15A:

An old S45 suburban train (operated by ÖBB, the Federal railways, type 4020) arriving at Breitensee, bound for Handelskai.

A train of line 43 (type B) at Hernals station. Quite an important interchange, as S45 stops here as well. (The bridge is part of the western suburban line). Additionally, two local bus lines stop here, as well.

S45 tracks between Ottakringand Hernals, looking south:

Looking north. A new Handelskai-bound train (type 4024) is about to enter Hernals station.

Both the S-Bahn bridge (to the left) and the combined U-Bahn (U6) pedestrian bridge across the Danube between Handelskai and Floridsdorf in the north of the city:

Upper deck in a regional train which crosses the city on its way between Breclav (CZ) and Reichenau an der Rax in Lower Austria:

The same train on the rather dreary underground S-Bahn tracks at Südbahnhof:

U1/Taubstummengasse, one of the stations along the southern branch of the line which happens to be one of the oldest sections of the original network (not counting the historical Stadtbahn tracks used today for U4 and U6):

A second generation (out of 3) U6 train on the aforementioned historical tracks along the Gürtel close to Alser Straße.

Some pictures of the new U2 section between Schottenring and Stadion:

The spectacular escalator connecting U4 (above) and the all-new U2 tracks:

The current eastern terminus of U2, Stadion. People who visited Vienna during Euro 08 will remember it.

Type B on line D (confusing, eh?) at Seegasse (9th district):

Older S-Bahn train leaving Wien-Mitte/Landstraße for Praterstern:

Wien-Mitte/Landstraße is going through a period of heavy reconstruction right now. This is the current northern entrance fo U3 and U4:

...and for S-Bahn and regional trains:

If you board a westbound/southbound S-Bahn here, your second regular stop is Südbahnhof:

...followed by Südtiroler Platz, undergoing construction works, as well.

Actually line 1 replaces line 65 and the southern branch of line N, while line 2 takes over the northern branch of line N and all of line J.

The recently refurbished Praterstern station (U1/U2/S-Bahn/regional trains). This is the S-Bahn level:

Looking along Knöllgasse (10th district). Two weeks ago, when I took this picture, these were the tracks of line 65. Since yesterday, it's line 1.

Matzleinsdorfer Platz, one of the underground tram stops along the southern trunk branch. (Lines 1, 6, 18, 62, WLB)

S45 again, this time between Gersthof and Hernals:

A southbound U6 train (type T) between Jägerstraße and Spittelau emerging from the tunnel below the 20th district and crossing the Donaukanal:

Handelskai (S-Bahn level):

WLB (local light rail between Vienna and the Lower Austrian city of Baden) near Dörfelstraße (12th district)

Donaumarina, a future U2 station (to be finished in late 2010):

Behind the station you can see the suspension bridge across the Danube. It has already been used for bus traffic and is now being refurbished to accomodate the U-Bahn.

Donaustadtbrücke. In Dec 2010, it will be the first U2 station east of the Danube, making the line the third one to cross the stream:

Well, line 21 has been scrapped in favor of U2. (Stupid move, very stupid move...)
Line 1 will use the same loop as line N, which is at the intersection of Prater Hauptallee and Rotundenallee (if you know where that is). That's about halfway between Praterstern and the stadium. Unfortunately there is no connection to any other line in this place.

As line 2 completely takes over line J, J has become obsolete and will not be operated under that name anymore. Hope that helped!

hmm... i've been in Wien since they opened U2 towards stadion but honestly i thought line 21 is still there so i didn't paying attention to it...
i agree it is a stupid move... 21 had much more stops and could serve a lots of people there...
i understand now... it uses track of line N, i thought line 1 was going over Praterstern somewhere so i was confused...

and line J gone too? i had a really nice memories with that line... shame...

but i hope those changes are for the best... (except line 21 )

that's true

btw, i always wondered why some of Vienna lines have letters instead of numbers...
do you know why is that? there are lots of unused numbers that could replace them...

It is (or was) a rather complicated system.

Lines 1-20:
Tangential lines. The higher the number, the farther away from the center.
(Until yesterday: 1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 18)

Lines 20-99:
Radial lines (i.e. linking the center with the suburbs), names given in counterclockwise direction around the center.
(Until yesterday: 26, 30, 31, 33, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46, 49, 52, 60, 62, 65, 67, 71)

Lines that showed features of both types mentioned above (i.e.: which connected the center with the suburbs and went tangentially around the center, so called "Durchgangslinien") were given letters.
(Until yesterday: D, J, N, O)

wow... that really does make sense... although i think that most people in Wien don't know that system
now i'm imagining all the lines in city and placing them on that scheme damn i'll go nuts one day
