Vienna's new, modernized S-Bahn stations look really good.

Südtiroler Platz (will become part of Vienna's new Central Station):

On Friday night U-Bahn line U3 broke down for 12 hours and was replaced by trams and busses:

There was some problem in the centralized traffic control station for the line. Wiener Linien claimed it was rather complex. My guess is that because it happened at night, when ridership is generally quite low, it was quite convenient to organize replacement service and take more time to solve the problem.

Very nice thread!
It´s great to have such a wonderful system of public transport in a city (especially if it´s your hometown )!

Hi! I don't know if this is the proper thread for it but I'll ask anyway. I'm going to Wien in July from Budapest by train and I need to get from Meidling station to a hotel near Taborstrasse U-bahn station. I figured that the best way would be to take a train to Praterstern station and then the U2. But is there a direct s-bahn train between these 2 stations? If there isn't, I'd prefer using the U-bahn only.

No, there's no direct S-Bahn train between these two stations as Taborstrasse is only a subway station.
I'd recommend you the option you've written above (take a S-Bahn to Praterstern and change there to the U2), because it's faster and more convenient...
Just take a northbound S-Bahn or Regio train, all of them will stop at Praterstern.

I love the new U2 line and its architecture! It has a simply brilliant clean cut modern design. Schottenring is by far my favorite one, a concrete masterpiece. I think Vienna has one of the coolest and most enjoyable transit systems in Europe.
BTW, message for the Austrian forumers: please do post more pictures is you have some!

The last phase of the U2 extension to Aspern under construction. It is pretty much leading into no man's land but around the last two stops a large city development area is located (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=357775)

For the first time in decades a substantial new branch of the tram network is being built north of the Danube. The new 26er extension (length: 4.5 km) is going to connect the U1 stop Kagraner Platz with the U2 part that is currently under construction. Once finished two different tram lines will connect U2 and U1 north of the Danube.

(planned tramway extensions are marked by thick yellow and green lines, the other thick lines are U6, U1 and fully completed U2)

The new track will be mostly at grade but has a short piece of elevated track including an elevated station (Gewerbepark Stadlau)

In the video below I've recently watched of a front view from a U-bahn train on Line 4 I can't work out why, from 3:20-4:00ish, the train verges right onto what is essentially a 'loop line', when the 'mainline' it was on anyway can't accept trains coming the other way?

But it can:
The "loop" appears to be the mainline; 'mainline', just a siding ... the following one's also accessible from the other direction:

When is the gradual replacement of the 1950s era trams with modern trams scheduled to be completed? At the moment, is seems the mix is roughly about 40% new trams and 60% old trams.
