You are confusing something, apparently. The postwar station hall of Westbahnhof has changed relatively little at the inside during redevelopment of the station. It is protected as an important example of public post war architecture.

In case you were talking about the new main station, instead of Westbahnhof, yes it will have an entry hall as well.

Around 125 000 to 150 000 passengers per day and more than 1000 trains.

Would have been nice to see a grander entrance to such a busy station, the perspective looks a little like an office block next to a shopping mall? Maybe i am being too harsh, just like to see some sort of civic architecture for a main entrance to the main station.

When I was in Vienna, the old Sudbahnhof was quite an underwhelming entrance to such a beautiful city, with quite a walk to the nearest S-Bahn station.

This new station will be excellent.

This is a big building, I didn't expect that from the other side.

Does the city have plans for some 21st century ticketing system (RFID/smartcard-based)?

No, it is not planned at the moment. Vienna is based on an open entrance system with ticketing before you enter the station. I guess the city is not willing to spend a fortune now on changing the current system.

Still, there is a problem with people travelling without ticket.

Any "21st century ticketing system" could only mean an impairment of comfort and functionality and an increase in costs from a customer's perspective. The longer they keep ditching it, the better.

No, it is an honour based system. Well, don't be afraid, the WL do not rely on naivity alone. While controls are only very sporadic, the fines are steep and every time I see controls only a tiny minority does not have a proper ticket.

This system has some very strong advantages over even contactless smartcards. People movement is obstacle free in stations and no big gate structures that inhibit flow and need lots of space are necessary. You also need fewer employees as no one has to be present at the non existing gates for security (nor do those non-existing gates have to be bought or maintained) and only a small part of these people saved here are needed for the sporadic checks. In bus and tram travel the service is sped up substantially by people having the possibility to board at any door.

You can have contactless cards and an honor based system.
This is not incompatible.

In which case the disadvantages I mentioned above are limited to those areas that are contactless card based.
