(APA, 1.12.2014)
Deadline is over today, new trams from Bombardier for Wiener Linien. Up to 156 "Flexibility"-sets at a total cost of €562M.

Let's hope these are not as horrible as the past ULF from Siemens. The maintenance cost on this thing is absurd.

edit: I don't know what I did wrong, I just linked to the derstandard article and it edited the URL out. Anyway this is a generic APA article, every newspaper has published it pretty much.

Vienna to introduce driverless U-Bahn trains

VIENNESE public transport operator Wiener Linien has announced the new U-Bahn Line U5 will be the first in the city to operate with driverless trains.

Wiener Linien says it has evaluated similar systems in other cities and concluded that safety levels on automatic metros are higher than on conventional lines.

The first section of Line U5 will open in 2023 between Karlsplatz and Altes AKH. The line will use the existing Karlsplatz – Rathaus section of Line U2, which will be converted to driverless operation, with a new-build section for the remainder of the line to Altes AKH.

Wiener Linien has also announced that a tender will be launched soon for a contract to supply and maintain up to 45 new six-car U-Bahn trains and these will need to be equipped for operation both with and without drivers. Twenty-four sets will be used to replace older trains whilst the others will provide the additional fleet capacity required for the expansion of the network.

A winning bidder is due to be selected by the end of next year, with deliveries scheduled to start in 2018 or 2019.

So, here we go! I've finally got around to processing some of my videos and pictures from Vienna. It's taken me a long time to put these together, but here are two of my first station tours.

First up, logically, is the airport station.

Next up is the station outside where we were staying - Burgasse-Stadthalle on the U-bahn line U6.

Many more to come. Vienna has an excellent and enviable transport network, so I hope I can showcase it well here.

Two more station tours.

First up is Westbahnhof - the major railway station serving the west of Vienna and the origin of the Westbahn (western railway). It is served by line S50 of the S-bahn and lines U3 and U6 of the U-bahn. Six tram lines also call at the station.

The next station tour is Wien Mitte / Landstraße Station. This station is quite new in its construction and is served by four S-bahn lines (S1, S2, S3 and S7) as well as two U-bahn lines (U3 and U4). The station is also the terminus for the CAT train from the airport.
