Twin Towers Advocacy continued
Since the other thread is outdated, and has gotten out of hand, anything that is realated to wanting the Twin Towers rebuilt will be mentioned here, but please adhere to the ground rules of this thread.
1. This thread will be for disscussing the advocacy of rebuilding the Twin Towers only. 2. If anyone wants to disscuss the official plans or 9/11 itself, there are threads for it or open a new one, so please don't mention it here as much as you don't want people mentioning pro-Towers statements there. 3. No personal attacks or steretypes on people who still believe there is a chance, b/c legally, there is according to Article 23 of the GIES under the Restoration Alternative that was provided by the LMDC. 4. If anyone wants to have personal discussions between each other, it can be done via PMs, emails, and chat rooms. Last edited by TalB; November 18th, 2007 at 03:30 AM. |

This will be my frist and only time in this thread. While I agree that the last thread got a little too Jerry Springerish it was a good thing it got locked and probably should have been tossed out when construction resumed. It was and still is useless. However it gives the 1 or 2 or even 3 people in here a platform to voice their opinion and opposition to the construction site of the New World Trade Center. There should be a thread for them to do so so that they infact do not tarnish the Construction thread.
However particular members do come in and jubilantly post irrelevant articles with the slightest hint of stalling, spire nonsense, and comparisons to other buildings when the topic should pertain to construction and construction only. Not to mention that particular members, while not the main factor, played roles in having World Trade Center construction threads shut down. So I find it ironic that they complain when their threads get to the same point those did when infact they played major roles in the reason construction threads were closed. Be that as it may.. I commend the mods for taking action here and would like to suggest that THIS BE the only thread where we see "fraudem tower", comparisons to the Shanghai World Financial Center, radical opposition to construction, and articles that include all of the above. It has no place in the construction thread where we are involved and enthusiastic about construction. Mancuso if you could please enforce that, then there should be no issues or altercations seeing as we would be completely seperated. Just a suggestion I'm floating. And seeing as all the bickering and back and forth will not be tolerated this thread will probably drop to page 2 in no time. I believe warnings were floated in the World Trade Construction thread to certain folks and that problems persisted with nothing done in there. Lets see if things go more smoothely with a seperate thread for those people. No more posts in here for me, at least until the building is topped out. Enjoy your discussions.. and I'm sorry for all the personal attacks..

I don't see myself posting too much on this thread either as there are obviously issues here that go very deep but I would just like to give my personal opinion on this issue.
Whatever you think of the design of the Twin Towers, the fact remains that it is a design that reflects the requirements and architectural fashions of the time when it was built (i.e. the late 60s /early 70s). It is highly unlikely that a modern architect working in 2007 would come up with that sort of design. Consequently, you have to accept that the idea of rebuilding the Twin Towers to a design that resembles the originals has more to do with the emotions and politics surrounding 9/11 than design considerations. The advocates of rebuilding are therefore proposing what is probably the biggest monument ever constructed to any event anywhere. This is where the politics come in. I don't want to belittle the trauma that New York suffered on 9/11 but you have to realise that in the league table of terrible events that can happen to cities, that is well down the list. Most British cities suffered far worse physical damage and lost far more people (in proportion to their size) during World War II than NYC did on 9/11 and Continental European cities (think of Rotterdam, Hamburg or Dresden) suffered death and destruction on an even greater scale. In more recent times, great natural disasters have killed tens of thousands and devastated whole cities from Turkey to Japan. 9/11 was not the San Francisco earthquake or New Orleans after Katrina. It was a disaster quite remarkable in the way it was contained to a very small part of the city. There were no armies of refugees and, apart from the buildings damaged or destroyed in the disaster, the rest of the city returned to normal in the space of a few days. What was remarkable about 9/11 was its enormous impact. No disaster in history has been publicised on anything like the scale with millions of people all over the world seeing the towers collapse live. The power of that event has had a profound effect on global politics. The USA and its allies (including Britain) have invaded and toppled the governments of two countries largely as a result of what happened to New York on September 11th. The power of the event to justify misguided or plain wrong action by Western governments in the future is very evident. I feel that to rebuild the twin towers, thereby creating the largest memorial in the world, would have the effect of reinforcing the iconic status of the disaster. That could be dangerous both for the USA and the rest of the world. |

Thank you, nygirl. I think I'll add a little bit to your post, for this will be my one and only post in the thread as well. I too, am sorry for any personal attacks that I may have caused, even though there are a few whos still believe that there might be a way for the former towers to be rebuilt. But since the old thread was closed and another one restarted on this same topic, may I ask the mods to make sure that no one spams, trolls or hijacks any of the Freedom Tower threads? I've seen some of those threads being widespread wildcat spammed with complaints about wanting the Twins rebuilt in there. I'm not claiming to be a saint - yes I have complained a lot in the closed thread, but to me, if this thread is to be dedicated soley to discussing the Twins AND ONLY the Twins, as it should be, then the Freedom Tower threads should also be treated the same as well. That there should be no talk about wanting the Twins rebuilt in any of those threads. And that if anyone does so, that we be given the right to ask them to come to THIS thread to talk about that subject. Or that one of the mods step in and delete or edit any of the posts that are not relating to the proper thread. While it's not fair for those of us who like and want the Freedom Tower built to come over here and chastise anyone in THIS thread for wanting the Twins back, then it should be just as eqally not fair for those who want the Twins rebuilt to come over to any of the Freedom Tower threads and start talking about their wants for the Twins. And there should be no bashing the tower in any of its threads, such as anyone calling it the Mohammad Atta Tower, nor should there be any mention of the former towers there. All discussions should be kept in their appropriate threads. In other words, Freedom Tower talk should be kept in those threads and any talk about the Twins should be kept here. Also, that no talk in any of the Freedom Tower threads from any of the Twin Towers advoactes be posted about the tower possibly being stalled or stopped. Fair game. Mark my words, any of the ProTwinTowers rebuilders who hijack any of the Freedom Tower threads with any talk about the Twins or any talk about wanting them back, or even name-calling the Freedom Tower and scorning it, trust me, they WILL be called out by me and asked not to post ANY info concerning the Twins there! Thank you. Enjoy your thread. Last edited by Daquan13; November 24th, 2007 at 12:44 AM. |

Comeback trail Pleasantville, N.Y.: If Eliot Spitzer is looking to regain the support of the people ("Gov. Spitzer crashed & burned but can still recover," Nov. 15), he can go over to Ground Zero and get rid of the Freedom Tower and bring back the twin towers, which is what the people want. It was Spitzer himself who said how undemocratically the official plans were picked - and it's Spitzer who can now prove that he really is the People's Lawyer. Tal Barzilai |

![]() ![]() Yes, it would have been a beautiful thing. I don't care what people here say...The overwhelming majority of the world will be looking at the WTC site in the not too distant future, murmuring under their breaths: "Where the hell's the other one?" ...And wondering how we only managed a half-assed rebuild project, regardless of the fact that yes, there will still be two other supertalls on the property. But guess what? When you build a tower within literally feet of the original location, one that takes on almost the exact shape of the original, to almost the same specifications (save for a roof that's been "twisted" by 45 degrees), people are going to ask that question. |

unless the facade resembles that of the former trade center, i highly doubt that. |

I might as well place all of the Youtube videos here for anyone who wants to hear pro-Towers statements.

TOWER POWER November 25, 2007 -- I am not surprised that Deutsche Bank caught on fire again recently ("Downtown Dithering," Nov. 18). As usual, the LMDC was cutting corners just so that it could meet a deadline. Of course, it won't just be the demolition of the Deutsche Bank that will delay the official plans. The Freedom Tower still has no tenants, and the costs have increased within the last year. Once Gov. Spitzer sees all these problems with the official plan, he should go back to having the Twin Towers rebuilt, an economically cheaper solution. Tal Barzilai, Pleasantville |

My letter didn't call for amending the official plan, it was for ending it.

On 12/16, there will be the annual rebuilders' holiday party. It will be over at the Hunan Balcony located at 98th St and Broadway at 6 PM. For anyone who is getting there by subway, they can take the 1, 2, or 3 trains to 96th-Broadway (prefered) or the B or C trains 96th St-CPW. If using the bus it is preffered to use the M104 bus on Broadway, though there is also the M7 and M11 buses on Amsterdam Ave and the M96 and M106 buses on 96th St as well as the M5 bus on Riverside Dr. If anyone wants to come, they should RSVP to Joy Goldberg, not me, and anything further goes to her as well. Walk-ins will not be welcomed, and nobody will pay for your food nor will you be paying for theirs, so please bring your money.

There are a number of new developments that have to be observed and taken into account before posting the specific blueprint for how we most certainly can “get there from here”. It will be up as soon as we can accurately portray the big picture. But, those who have willfully forced this hatchet job of a World Trade Center on the rest of us must have noticed by now that nothing ever goes smoothly there and should be asking themselves if, maybe, just possibly, that is because it’s not meant to be. Nothing that has been gerrymandered at the WTC since 9/11 was done with the support of the people or the diligent oversight of their federal, state, or local representatives. The public land giveaway and misappropriation of billions of dollars was all the result of an abuse of power by the Executive branch and the dereliction of duty by the Legislative branch. The only way to unravel it and set it straight is through the involvement of the Judicial branch and that is being pursued. Meanwhile the cartoon above is worth a thousand words. The famous goalposts that said “New York, New York” for thirty years were not disposable symbols. Those who are invested in remaking the World Trade Center into something completely different are quick to ridicule the notion that the current plan is essentially a monument to terrorism. Hard to believe. It takes very little imagination to understand that materially changing the 9/10/2001 skyline, when we could have already so easily restored it, is a nod to Bin Laden. It takes very little sensitivity to understand that his admirers would applaud the part they played in setting the stage for the finished product. To deny that is willfully ignorant. No doubt, they would appreciate having their attack given permanence, but we do not have to permit it. As politically incorrect as the cartoon may be, it is not hard to see why many find the notion of leaving those footprints empty so utterly tasteless and a glorification of the diabolical mind that set the attacks in motion. When is a prominent scar ever considered healthy or desirable? Who can really explain why putting the Towers back where they belong would be anything but a tribute to the heroes and victims we could never forget? We certainly do not need to see the “footprints” to mourn the day. Why would we remember those deaths more faithfully than those lives? If we want to take eight acres to properly memorialize the bravery and the anguish of our loss, then take the first four floors in reborn Twins to do it right. Looking down is not where we will find them — we have to look up to catch their essence — and to restore the buildings they last entered would be a symbolic victory. We are not stuck with this fake WTC. There is no getting around the fact that it is the public’s land and the public’s money. To allow the current pompous plans to be inflicted on us is addle-brained. We’re better than that. Aren’t we? |
