Most metros/subways have no ballast when underground, it is normal.

The DLR in London is quite shaky and noisy despite being very modern, apparently it's because of concrete ballast though I think it's because it's cheaply constructed...

Don't have much experience on other metro's but from the one's I've used the Victoria is the worst simply because the noise is practicaly unrelenting unlike say the Northern which I also use each day.

Which section do you use? Victoria - Oxford Circus isn't too bad, southbound is worse than northbound.

At least the line is fast and efficient, by London standards...

Washington DC's metro is much quieter than NYC, mainly due to rubber pads between the rail and the concrete trackbed, plus the larger dimensions of its stations which tend to disperse the noise. Also, almost all of the stations are perfectly straight, so that there is no squealing as a train rounds a curving track.

On the other hand, a ride the section of the Red Line between Bethesda and Friendship Heights can be very loud due to the high speed attained on that section. And the violent shaking of the plexiglas windows on that stretch can be quite alarming to someone riding that line for the first time.

The noise doesn't come only from the contact between rails and wheels. It come also from the engine, from bogies due to their construction and from other things. Tunnels and stations design is alos important because the materials used have a great impact on sound absorbtion abilities.
So, it is not always that rubber pads may reduce the noise coming from the train.

Systems like Washington, Moscow and London should be noisier then because of the single track tunnels lined with metal...

Would it be wrong to assume that Moscow's trains are noisy because they were designed to be basic, as it means there is less to go wrong and hence more reliability, something which is needed considering the 90 sec headways?

I am not aware of it...
But maybe it is not the reason. New trains that go to Moscow City have 7-minute hedways and they are still very noisy especially their engines.
But perhaps you are right, engineers have always thought of reliaility and never - of comfort. The same story happens to Russian planes and railway trains but I am not very sure that 2 latter are so dependable...

Engines of 81-740 are indeed not very noisy. And those are actually trains that works on entire lines 3, 4 and l1. Not only on IBC branch. As of noise - most of noise is coming from rails. New rails simply need some time to get in proper condition.

See for yourselves.

To me, it seems noisy because the windows of the train are open...

Completely disagree. The first point is that their engines are not less nosiy that those of old trains. The point is not about the rails, they are indeed in good condition, simple evidence:such trains run on line 4 and they seem to be really noisy not less than old trains that line having old rails. And the sound insulation of the engines is not satisfactory at all.

This was an old type train. But you're right, a new one with ventlights open won't be less noisy inside.

This is taken in 81-717 car. They were never been used on lines 3 and 4 and were used just for few month after opening on line l1. Anyway,
1. At 80kmph it will be noisy for sure because of narrow tunnel
2. Look at station, where train is stopped - the noise is keep going. It's a pure fake or just very badly normalized sound.

Just latest videos from new extension. It's noise and indeed because of rails needs some time to get polished well.

81-740
Park Pobedy - Kuntsevskaya, line 3

Old Ezh train
Kuntsevskaya - Park Pobedy, line 3

You can hear - there is much less noise in old section (old revers sidings behind of park pobedy station).

Personally, I woildn't say 81-740 is quieter having watched these movies.
Inside, it is of course quiter only with all the ventlights closed.
But I was also talking about exterior noise, that's why I emphasied that new train engines are not less noisy. When it arrives it produces much loud noise, and the noise is only of a different type. But still not less noise than that coming from an old type train.

I beleve the Stockholm C20 class, Bombardier built subway cars are the most quiet of them all. The traction equipment is extremely quiet!

When it's arrive the noise is coming from cheap breaks. First trains 81-740/81-741 were equipped with quite shoes. But later most of trains were equipped with cheaper very noisy shoes. After a numerous complaints Gaev promised to replace them all. As far as I know there are still several trains left.

@PCC
Actually most of metro trains, including those very noisy, are very quite on open sections.

I am not talking about brakes noise, I even didn't think about that. I am talking about the engine noise because the train also slows down with the engine's power. the same thing is when it starts and acclerates, the noise is not less strong than that of an old train.

There is nothing wrong with noisy trains... It's part of the experience. Look on page 2, there are more examples and they are all noisy.
