Urbis
Isn't the Urbis a magnificent building! A real architectural success for modern Manchester.
I remember sitting in a car on the very land where it now stands, in a non descript bit of flattened (pot-holed) land that was a public car park. Eating cereal from a polystyrene cup with my parents at 8 a.m waiting for Marks & Sparks to open, my Mum's idea being that we would get some sort of strategic advantage having cereal when we arrived rather than before we set off, by missing traffic or something- Was that just me then haha! The Urbis!

Clayton Vale/Philips Park
I went for a (admittedly pointless) walk earlier today down Clayton Vale, heading into Philips Park and took a few snaps. Please excuse the general incompetence of the photography; these were very-much a first attempt. It's amazing how much work is being carried out down this area of the medlock valley; new drainage, pathways, furniture, forest management, etc. I particularly like the way they've turned the River Medlock into a what looks like a water slide in Philips Park by creating a brick-lined chute for it to flow down. It's quite eerie watching this fast-flowing river drift by in virtual silence (unfortunately the batteries in the camera died before I could get a shot). I'm taking an inflatable rubber ring next time...
River Medlock: ![]() Flats in Newton Heath overlooking the Vale: ![]() River Medlock again: ![]() ...and a bit of proper 'grit': the fencing that's supposed to stop you getting on top of the railway arches as they go over Bank Street and carry on behind the Velodrome (where they abruptly end before reaching Ashton new Road): ![]() Taken from Philips Park looking out towards the CIS: ![]() From Philips Park, a view of the B of the Bang nestled between the velodrome and the new flats opposite: ![]() Playground in Philips Park with City Tower in the distance: ![]() Another shot of Philips Park with town in the background: ![]() And thus concludes my Clayton odyssey! |

have a interactive 3d virtual model of the whole site. Complete with details of most buildings. www.auvc.co.uk here is a screen shot ![]() The whole block is great, with all its quirky buildings. My personal favourite has to be the Derros Building next door. One of the best refurb jobs in the city imo. (corner blding with B&W detailing on roof) Hudsons Building 1924 – 4 storey three bay, with vertical columns and ornamented pediment – Yellow faience with large cracks. Refurbished to provide ground floor commercial with residential above. 53 Ancoats Street 1865 – Ornate brick façade to Great Ancoats Street and Blossom Street. Paired windows three bays to Ancoats Street and Blossom Street. Originally a Japanning works. Has been a blind making works and offices of the Amalgamated Association of Cotton Spinners. Premises now vacant. Derros Building 1899 – 4 storey red industrial brick with top floor in Cheshire black and white, end gable and bow window to Ancoats Street and strong yellow banding. Chamfered corner entrance. Built as a Methodist women’s night shelter and coffee tavern. Also 1899 – 1903 was a maternity hospital. Later used as a club by Express Printers.Recently refurbished to create ground floor commercial and residential above. Doctors Building 1888 - Three storey attractive red brick Art Noveau type building. 2 pairs of tall thin windows on the second floor, generous bow window on the first floor, 4 openings ground floor (boarded up). 1888 occupied by a druggist and by 1911 by Walk Williams – a surgeon. 1930s a lodging house and subsequently as a dwelling house. Since 1987 residential in connection with Ben’s Ice Creams. Great Ancoats Street Sub Station 1927 – Three pairs of round headed windows on 1st floor, brick panels and entrance on ground floor. Built to convert high voltage current to low voltage for the tram network.Planning consent granted for mixed use conversion, commercial and residential.
