We will be able to watch some serious steel-porn when they build the "MEP-COMMS ACS" floor below the Sky Lobby. In this floor will be the change from a side core layout to a central core layout including 30 elevator shafts...

Seriously!

I'm inclined to believe the decision to flip the towers around came down to the question of where you put the observation deck. You want the deck to keep its current orientation (best views) if you're going to have it at all -- and it would have not worked aesthetically to have a SW jutting platform on a NE leaning tower.

But if that really is the only reason they flipped the tower, just shoot me now, because design is dead.

That's fine, but even if this was comprised of ugly boxes it wouldn't be a waste of space.

While I agree with your reasoning, this excuse(imo) might help you justify the change.

What's the drill rig up to??

I assume that the yellow drill rig (my term) is either for more test borings for the ERY platform/North tower or actual start of foundation elements.

The drill rig has appeared in a number of photos: hopefully somebody with more knowledge will comment.

Yeah, I've just never bought the whole "dancing towers" thing, although I understand that's the intent. It's just an instinctual reaction to the shapes -- I think they're awkward and inelegant. I bet KPF know this too. If the observation deck gets scrapped for whatever reason, I bet they flip the crowns back around.

Based on your user name I assume you just don't like glass buildings.

Given the diameter of the drill, I would say foundation elements.

I don't like the shape of this buildings but apparently it's just me. If New Yorkers really like this, OK then.

It isn't just you. The lower part of it appear way too fat for my taste from some angles. But overall it is not a bad design. Also, the urban contribution of this whole complex will be great and will create an ultramodern city within a city

The base is actually amazing. There's a dramatic shard on the northeast facade, which, from this angle, appears to run the whole length of the base, but, in reality, it's about 15 to 20% of the base's width.

Contrast that view looking straight down 10th from the north, with this one from the northeast, in whic the shard on te base is visible.

I think the N. Tower would look better at around 450m and more proportional. I agree with you on the tower looking a little chunky. The designs are alright and at least they are not rectangles.

Thank you. A poster in the Coach Tower thread gave a link to the Flickr photostream of "hardcore shutterbug" who has a number of week old shots of the area, including oblique overheads. In the week old photos it looks like they were assembling the drill rig in the NE corner of the ERY. The photo linked below also shows white trucks with red tall vertical gizmos (test bores?) in the SW corner of the ERY. I ASSUME those trucks are related to the Amtrak Gateway tunnel and/or Corset Tower foundations.

It should start getting more crowded in the rail yard as all the contractors and subs get going...

PS: I assume the! landscaped! entrance to the real-soon-now #7 subway entrance is in the top left of the photo, to the right of the stations's funky vent bldg on the SE corner of 33rd & 11th. I'm guessing the landscaping will removed when Hudson Yards Tower Wahtver is constructed on top of the station entrance & vent building.

One Hudson is behind the vent building while the McDonalds site is to the right including the black building. I'm pretty sure the subway entrance is in the middle in the southernmost Hudson park section and won't have anything on top.

Recent MTA photos/rendering of site

Yeah, you are right. That's the way it appears in the MTAPhotos Flickr photostream below, with One Hudson also overbuidling on the vent building. Site J is the MTA's name for this site (NE corner of 33rd & 11th) of the #7 extension:

And here's the MTAPhotos RENDERING of what will exist in June 2014, starting with the May 2012 photo. The lots on the north side of 34th already look different NOW from the original May 2013 photo.

image hosted on flickr

So, by the time the #7 34th st subway station/ Hudson Blvd plaza shown above opens in june 2014, the HY area will have what's shown in the rendering plus:
the Coach tower will have risen a good distance
I assume the Culture shed/plaza next to the Coach tower will be above the High Line level
the LIRR MOE building & vehicle ramp will be removed and the western end of the Amtrak Gateway tunnel box will be excavating into the bedrock under the yard
and north Tower foundation work will be proceeding in the NE corner of the ERY

I still have no idea how they will build the platform across the ERY itself.

Well it looks like 2 potential companies will be off the market looking for larger space that were rumored looking here.

Sony (500 k sf) and Credit Suisse (1.5 m sf)

Sony moving to 11 Madison Avenue

Note: Term sheet signed but not a done deal w/ Sony just yet.

Hmph, I wonder if a company will ever decide to finish 11 Madison to its intended height. Would be certainly awesome
