Well that explains the feeling of foreboding I always experience on the FDR Drive. I'm driving on Nazi-created rubble!

Very interesting tidbit, thanks!

I'm not sure. I think we lost a chance with Westway proposal back in the 80s, where you would have placed the West Side Drive underneath a new infill on the Hudson.

Underground highway, new real estate, quiet(er) shaded boulevards... and why did it never come to be. Mating bass.

Those liberals...

I'm pretty sure all the landfills are the reason behind both the 22 and 23 square miles figures for Manhattan. Older sources typically use 22, while newer ones use 23.

Speaking of landfill and how the island of Manhattan has changed, here's this thing, the Welikia Project, where you can see in Google Earth satellite style, how Manhattan was, as well as the outher boroughs, before New York was New York, before Henry Hudson arrived there.
http://welikia.org/

two examples, Lower Manhattan and the Hudson Yards area as they were before the europeans settle.

GIC Said to Invest in Time Warner Headquarters in New York
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-1...-new-york.html

Quote:
GIC Pte, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, is part of a group that is buying the headquarters of Time Warner Inc. (TWX) in New York City, according to one person with direct knowledge of the transaction..
.

Quote:
Time Warner would sell its 1.1 million-square-foot space at its namesake complex to an investment group led by Related Cos. for more than $1.3 billion and move to a new skyscraper planned on Manhattan’s far west side, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said in July. The owner of cable channels will lease Time Warner Center back for five years, about the time it would take to build the skyscraper at Related’s Hudson

So glad with Time Warner as its anchor tenant we're assured of seeing the North Tower completed by 2018.. while we wait for the Eastern Midtown District approval to happen hopefully now by late next year, we have the exciting development especially on the West Side and Central Park area to keep us happy to see things REALLY looking up for NYC!

Singapore plows $400M into group’s Time Warner HQ buy

Quote:
Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC is contributing $400 million to the Related Companies-led $1.3 billion purchase of Time Warner’s headquarters in the Time Warner Center.

The new owners of the 1.1 million-square-foot space would lease the space back to Time Warner for approximately five years, at which point the media giant would move to an 80-story skyscraper planned for Related’s Hudson Yards. Time Warner, which owns the space in the Related-developed complex, put it on the market in April, enlisting the services of Eastdil Secured’s Doug Harmon and Adam Spies.

The move follows a recent wave of sovereign funds looking to diversify risk by moving their investments beyond bonds and into alternative assets such as real estate. For example, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund purchased a 45 percent stake in Boston Properties’ 7 Times Square in September for $684 million in cash.

North Tower was always assured of being done earlier, rather than later. It anchors the entire project and phases 2, 3 and whatever else they want done in the area needed that boost of desirability because, let's be honest, right now the HY are not grade A real estate. They're a train yard.

Having large buildings like the North Tower in place makes everything else a lot easier to get tenants for.

I think that's also why Related will give very good deals to tenants at 1 and 2 Hudson Blvd (ie, McDonald's). It wants the area to be vibrant once it starts marketing apartments.

It's a train yard next to active Department of Sanitation facilities

I'm gonna miss seeing the trains to be honest. I wish they could have incorporated trains into the design of these buildings.

And some of the residential properties developed here should be mixed income properties too. Lets not turn the entirety of Manhattan into a "no poor people" zone.

Had you seen this? http://m.ny.curbed.com/archives/2012..._sculpture.php

If they are willing to spend a 100 million for a central sculpture, maybe they could spend 25 on this and lower the main ones budget.
