We haven't gotten any word about the observation desk being removed (they'd be crazy to get rid of it, as it'll be a huge moneymaker). There are a lot of renders of the many previous iterations of the HY towers, several of which have been either recycle for various promotional materials or just not updated.

Honestly, I think the observation deck makes the top of the tower quite ugly, but it will be an incredible space for tourists with an unparalleled view.

"observation deck will be higher than One World Trade’s"

Yep.

The handiest quote I found was from the June 30th Architectural Record, reporting on a tour they (& others) received from Related Companies on 6/26/2014:

Quote:
But the platform, which will sweep across 10 acres, does pave the way for those three high-rises, which include 30 Hudson Yards, an 80-story office tower also designed by KPF. About half-leased, to tenants like Time Warner, it will be the city’s fourth tallest building when finished, though its observation deck will be higher than One World Trade’s, according to a slick multi-media presentation that preceded the tour; a cocktail lounge will be nearby.

Except for the reduction in height to 1,227ft it looks like they've kept noticeable physical changes to this tower to a minimum, for which I'm glad.

progress: LOTS of concrete

Progress reported for the 30 HY site by HY FB page:

"
Quote:
On Wednesday [8/6] the crew poured more than 2,600 cubic yards of concrete for the AMTRAK tunnel and Coach’s 15th and 16th floors at 10 Hudson Yards."
https://www.facebook.com/HudsonYards...type=1&theater

The east end of the Amtrak tunnel provides part of the foundations for 30 HY's retail podium. The photo that the HY FB page provided with their HY "Fun Fact Friday!" is lousy resolution and not relevant to 30 HY so I have not re-posted it.

I'm assuming that media outlets or an enthusiast will provide recent photos of the Hudson Yards overbuild...

From HY Facebook:

There's a lot happening on site. We've got four drill rigs simultaneously installing caissons, and our "Joanie" (red Manitowoc crane) is helping to lift the heavy stuff. Team work!

Love seeing that platform creeping north!

BUSY construction area around 30 HY site

Yerp. The photo below shows the east side of the overbuild platform today, looking west from the SE corner of 31st & 10th Ave.
8.14.2014

At least the caisson drill shown below was grinding away this afternoon. Photo is looking west at the still-extant 10th Ave ramp vehicle ramp. This drill is south of the ramp & I assume north of the Amtrak tunnel casing

I watched the big red crane place porta-potties onto the south "sidewalk" of 33rd st today (photo below); 10 HY is the backdrop.
8.14.2014

Maybe the're getting ready to start building the platform from the north end of the site. The photo below (looking east w/ canyon of 33rd street on left) shows that 33rd is down to one traffic lane in this area. Note the two trailers with the HEAVY steel fabrications. They had unloaded large timber matting from the trailer on the right

That Brutalist building has got to be the most god awful excuse for architecture. What a monstrosity. Would be nice if they demolish it completely.

Lol yes that building gives me eye cancer, but thank God for the exterior renovations they're doing on it along with the Manhattan west project. After it gets a new look it will look very attractive and modern, i believe that the renovations should start anytime soon according to my sources

you can see some platform column sections on trailers in those photos.

its hard to tell from the perspective, but those are solid laminated plates. The 10' sections weigh around 20 tons.

A closer view of one of the steel pieces on a trailer, on W33rd Street:

8.14.2014

AND, two photos of the AP HQ entrance in 450 West 333rd Street, NY, NY. The first one is an overview of the north sidewalk/facade re-construction?? platform.
Note that an AP employee died in the Gaza Strip (bomb disposal gone bad) last week, IIRC
Media is a significant portion of the NY, NY economy

For the heck of it & for j-biz memories, the artboy11211/flickr photo is taken (8.17.2014) from the roof of the aforementioned, "eye cancer"-giving, AP HQ bldg, looking SE

Artboy11211 has access to the roof of 450 W 33rd, which is a good viewpoint for the Hudson Yards & Manhattan West construction.

Here's a 8.4.2014 west looking sunset photo taken from the roof-top basketball court. The stump of 10 Hudson Yards is in bottom left with the 11th Ave viaduct (& it's DSNY garbage trucks at rest) across the yards. Right side of the view will be blocked by 30 HY.

Artboy11211 "Secret Dancer || If you want to dance, sometimes you have to make your own music. Model: @angelreigns"

And here's a 8.14.2014 10th Ave sidewalk view looking in the same direction (west) with the 11th Ave viaduct common to both photos, and Weehawken, NJ across the Hudson River

EDIT: Note that this ramp down from 10th Ave is no longer used by the LIRR to access the "West Side Storage Yard Complex" and I expect Tutor-Perinito to demolish it in the next couple of months as the overbuild platform continues moving north.
