Lo-res photo from amnewyork 8.20.2014

Ivan Pereira/amnewyork has a short article from the 8.20.2014 meida tour and a low-res photo by Jason Andrew. Photo is looking east towards 10th Ave from underneath the 11th Ave viaduct. Big red crane on left marks the general 30 HY site.:

The developers of Hudson Yards show a sneak peak into the progress of the site on August 20, 2014 on the west side of Manhattan. (Credit: Jason Andrew)

Quote:
One of the main features of the east side development is its 10-acre elevated platform that will connect the various buildings, the future ground level public square and the High Line.
Samuelian [VP of Realated Companies] said construction on that crucial part is also going strong. Once it's completed next year, it will help facilitate the construction of the other commercial towers and the retail space planned for 10th Avenue, he said.
The developer added that the public won't be able to be on the platform, which will be 10 to 27 feet above street level, after it is completed because it will be used by construction crews.
They will, however, be able to get a closer look at the development when the new No. 7 extension into the West Side opens next year.

Sounds like 30 HY might actually start rising next year: "construction of the other commercial towers" ...

This week+ old HYNY FB photo shows platform steel being stored in the yards (photo bottom right) just south of 33rd street:

progress on overbuild platform/retail podium

Geoff Butler posted his monthly? set of construction photos on the HY FB page 2? days ago.

The photo I've reposted below show one of the large cranes sitting on top of the built up to grade east end of the Amtrak gateway tunnel box. I assume they will be erecting overbuild platform/retail steel on top of this tunnel box section in the next couple. There's an overbuild column on the flatbed trailer, photo is looking NE from the recently erected portion of the overbuil platform:

I agree, VG. I assume that the night time lighting on the tower will be amazing!

Lots of work around HY site.

These columns are higher than plaza level. Are they part of North Tower, solgoldberg, jacko or anybody?

Pouring concrete for tunnel.

Pirates.

Concrete wall going up.

Concrete being poured.

First platform build over tunnel.

Steel.

Hard to tell. They look massive, so they could be bearing a tower in the future...

cool update BTW .

Those taller columns do look huge! Plus the North Tower will be built from steel, so this could very well be U/C

Also is there a webcam for The Hudson Yards?

Yes, thanks for the great photos. Lots of progress!

jacko would be more authorative than I am.
BUT, they do look to be columns for the north side, western end of 30 HY. If you look through the animation of the platform construction you'll see that the "stump" (my term) of 30 HY is above the level of the Hudson Park-Blvd plaza/whatever overbuild platform. I assume that is due to the presence of the LIRR substation below the North Tower and the height of the massive trusses that will go above the throat of the LIRR tracks. AFAIK they also have to remove the "second floor" from the LIRR substation along with the ?currently unused? LIRR worker bridge above the throat.

The ILNY photo is looking ESE from W33rd, west of 10th Ave

"These columns are higher than plaza level. Are they part of North Tower, solgoldberg, jacko or anybody?"

ILNY

My interpretation of the platform construction animation is that they also build the "plaza level" platform first around 30 HY & it's truss area and then erect the trusses/whatnot from the newly built plaza platform.
Not particularly useful snip (llooking north) from platform animation below; 10 HY site is bottom right corner:

those columns are there for preassembly and test fit up. They cannot be shipped as one piece but they can be lifted as one piece by the 18000. They will be welded out on the street before they are lifted into place.

they are for the platform.

70-90 tons each.

Thanks: I was wondering why they seemed SO close to 33rd street!

Big news for the Hudson Yards!

Neiman Marcus to Join the Manhattan Elite
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/04/fa...lite.html?_r=0

Quote:
It took 107 years, but Neiman Marcus is moving to Manhattan.

The Dallas-based company is opening a 250,000-square-foot store in Hudson Yards on the Far West Side in 2018. The lease was signed on Tuesday, said Karen Katz, the chief executive of Neiman Marcus Group.

“We needed to make sure that if we were taking this big, big step of coming to Manhattan, that we had a store that was going to be very impressive,” she said, speaking by phone from her Dallas office.

The store, which will be the centerpiece of a new retail complex by Related Companies, the developer of the Hudson Yards project, will be between 31st and 32nd Streets on 10th Avenue. Neiman Marcus will have prominent signage on the facade of the seven-story building, and will occupy space on floors five through seven. It will be allotted more than 80,000 square feet per floor. It is the first retailer that Related has announced for Hudson Yards.

“This entire project has been bespoke-tailored around Neiman Marcus,” said Kenneth Himmel, the executive at Related who is in charge of the retail and leasing at Hudson Yards. “This is a game changer for Hudson Yards, for the West Side of New York, for Manhattan,” he said. “It’s not just an anchor tenant. It makes a statement for our project.”

Neiman Marcus’s move into Manhattan is the latest by a department store at a time when many players are expanding and spending freely to take advantage of what they describe as a growing luxury market. The president of Saks Fifth Avenue, Marigay McKee, has been given about $1 billion to spend on Saks’s stores throughout the country over the next few years, with a good portion of that dedicated to the flagship store in Midtown.

Awesome! So within the span of a couple years (or possibly even months), NYC will have a first-ever Nordstrom and a first-ever Neiman Marcus... and both are tied to major skyscraper developments. Love it.

So along with some of the major towers opening in 2018, now we have 2 major department stores vying for our attention around the same time. 2018 is gonna be a banner year in more ways than one.

"SHOPS AT HUDSON YARDS"

Yes.
And a new?? rendering for what the retail plaza could like from the southern end of Hudson Park & Blvd (block 0?)/"Public Square of Hudson Yards".
Also a couple of other tidbits in the fine details (or lack thereof) of the NYT reportage. "Lack thereof" being no date for 10 Hudson Yards occupancy:

"L’Oréal and Coach are likewise moving into office space in a 52-story tower at the corner of 30th Street and 10th Avenue. The Culture Shed, which will be on 30th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues, is a prospective new home for New York Fashion Week."

As appeared in the NYT 9.3.2014, looking SSE from the "Public Square"

NYtimes "A rendering for the new Neiman Marcus."

And for easy reference the "Public Square" or thereabouts viewpoint; this diagram's "RETAIL" is the above's "THE SHOPS AT HUDSON YARDS":

AND you can have fun comparing the details of the above diagram (from curbed in June?) vs. the one below from today's Bloomberg reportage:

I'll bet you any money a Starbucks is going to go in that little "retail pavilion" thing across from the Neiman-Marcus.
