I disagree. Those columns were placed as part of the platform phase. Although they will, eventually, form part of the tower itself, the tower isn't solely under construction.

No need to jump the gun at the first opportunity.

But Jacko says that part of the frame erected actually supports the tower itself

Much of the platform is just to cover over the train tracks for space above, this section is for the tower itself

Take the example of Wilshire Grand in Los Angeles, They dig a hole several stories deep that occupies a whole block. the Tower itself occupies just a fraction of that hole, but as soon as they began pouring fundations, it was labeled as U/C.

In that case, I don't think you would say the same, that the tower itself is not U/C until it reachs street level, because in that case, all the underground levels, occuping the entire block, would be the similar as the platform is in this case.

Although in this case, if they were building columns for the platform outside the footprint of the building I wouldn't consider it U/C (in the case of LA I would) but since those columns are indeed part of the building, I think it should be considered U/C. Or to put it in another way, the platform is the area otside the footprints of the buildings, which would be just a roof for the yard, with public spaces above it. The areas on the footprints of the buildings, are the buildings, which happen to be above a rail yard.

If they didn't want to began building the tower itself just yet, they will be doing only the part of the platform that is just public space, if they are placing these columns, it is because they want to begin erecting the tower right now. Both, the tower with the retail base, and the public space platform are being built at the same time. I don't think it is two faces, like they will deck aaaaaall the yard, and then build the tower, it will be a parallel process.

Most likely we will see the building going vertical early next year, but at first I think it will be a very slow progress (apparently) because of its special structure, with very big, leaning columns, until they get to the transition where the structure is more conventional. Maybe it will took them almost all next year just to build the base (the first 6 or 7 floors)

Of course this tower is U/C. Since when is basement / foundation work not considered as U/C? thejacko explained it perfectly.

Thread should be moved.

Excellent towers for NYC. I'm glad this one is moving along, it's way better than some other, too crazy proposals they got.

Wow! New York is going to get it's first building with an offset, cantileving, self supported sky deck!

Super to see this in the construction forum! When should we expect to see this rising above ground level? Maybe next spring?

We can always put it back when they don't continue after completion of the patform.
