Yea a park would be great but I would want some tall residential towers mixed within it with about 60% of it being green. Sort of like a continuation of HY phase 2 but in a bigger scale and more park.

I agree with V_G... a lot of greenery would be great but build a mix of few residential towers with a large amount of green open space , akin to HY2.

Stephen Ross to students: 'Find something you love'
http://www.detroitnews.com/story/bus...tate/25550605/

Quote:
His $13 billion Hudson Yards development project is underway on a 20 million square foot site on the west side of Manhattan. It's a mixed-use project with office space, living space and retail surrounding a plaza that will be larger than Trafalgar Square in London.

"We gave the corporate tenants a deal they couldn't say no to knowing we wouldn't be making a profit on that, but needing them for critical mass," said Ross.

He said the plaza in the center will feature a $200 million sculpture that will be announced next summer.

"It will be the icon of New York for the 21st century," he said. "It will be to New York what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris."

Talk about large expectations. Anything less than mind blowing will be a disappointment.

It better be for that price tag

Looking up 11th Ave today. It's amazing to consider how this area is transforming from a dump to a showplace!

From the Highline yesterday.

The Western Yards are utterly vast! The nice thing too is that it will be largely green space!

Adjacent to the HY's Western Yards (on the south) are two, largely empty sites that span the entire block from 11th to 12th Avenues. Each site must contain millions of sf of development rights.

I think that one is owned by the city and the other is owned by the NYC utility, ConEd. Both lots are used to store trucks.

The site to the north of the western yards, which I also believe the city owns, is also huge and can probably support at least 2msf. Here's a photo of it taken yesterday. I believe that Javits presently uses it for parking trucks.

This site also is depicted in this development map. It's the portion covered by the high line terminus.

While I have no doubt the "sculpture" will be spectacular, it simply isn't going to be to NY what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. That's just silly, IMO. The Eiffel Tower is not just an icon of Paris, but of all of France and, to be frank, the world.

If you could create something as iconic as the Eiffel tower simply by spending money, every city would have a Eiffel Tower. It's like trying to catch lightning in a bottle.
Might I add that the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be a temporary exhibit for the world's fair, and was reviled by all of the Architecture critics when it went up.
Still...I'm wishing them good luck at Hudson Yards.

I think this will be way, way better than the bean. NY is getting an Anish Kupoor bean at 56 Leonard.

That being said, the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty, which were both commissioned by France around the same time, are two of the world's greatest landmarks, and it's unlikely this will compare. I hope that something idiotic isn't built like that horrible tall sculoture by Kapoor in London's Olympic Park.

I'm confident it will be top class. There is a lot of ambition in this entire project.

I think one of those spots is not being built on because of its relation to the gateway tunnel

Hudson Yards needs a big Public Pool that can convert to a Skating Rink in the winter as part of the project.

A guy on this site named JackO seems to work for Related and apparently knows what the sculpture is. I believe that he said that it's not beautiful, but it's very interesting. I believe that the thing is going to be interactive.

The Gateway Tunnel was incorporated into Related's plans for HY. That's why they built it first.

I was referring to one of the "industrial" sites Lex was talking about
