Well, that's your opinion and I respect that. In my opinion it is more important for a skyscraper to be big and to look good than to fit into it's surroundings

Okay guys. I did some researching and counting and made a list. And it turns out, if every proposal right now goes through, NYC might have as many as fifteen supertalls in the near future!

If you don't believe me I'll make a list ^.^

1. 1 World Trade Center-541m
2. 2 World Trade Center-411m
3. Hudson Yards North Tower~400m
4. Empire State Building-381m
5. 15 Penn Plaza-371m
6. Manhattan West Tower I-371m
7. Bank of America Tower-366m
8. 3 World Trade Center-357m
9. 225 West 57th~350m
10. GiraSole-323m
11. Tower Verre-320m
12. Chrysler Building-319m
13. New York Times Tower-319m
14. One 57-306m
15. The Drake~300m
16. Hudson Yards South Tower~300m

Compare this to Chicago's possible 7 supertalls, Shanghai's 5, Hong Kong's 6, or Dubai's 20-something supertalls and damn! New York is back in the game! ^.^

Edit-Oh, and if there's something I forgot, I would love to know

Edit 2-Added 225 West 57th

The 'terra firma' part is critical here: no need to wait for a platform over the rail yards with all the fuss, expense and delays. The Coach Tower can go up next year. Only after that platform gets done can the rest of the scheme start to rise. And if all goes well, we're looking at a new downtown in NYC:

Final designs and heights may vary...

dont forget the possible supertall at 225 west 57th. some people are reasonably predicting that tower could be in the ~350m range. that makes 16 supertalls.

There won't be any Madison Square Garden towers. The arena going to be there for a long long time.

Couldn't agree more. The biggest tower is of no value if its design isn't carefully thought through or if it makes the surroundings look ridiculous.
Quality architecture in itself is of far more value for a city. Buildings skyscrapers shouldn't be all about a phallus size measuring contest.

sorry i mean 1 madison avenue. It's not a super tall but it is certainly close enough and in an area that it will certainly make a visual impact

Well, if you're hinting at downgrading or even defaulting, I suspect that those are faux-scares. But if you're talking about the increasing likelihood of a double-dip recession ...

It's a matter of time until the two huge warehouses just north of the park are razed and replaced with multiple supertalls. I cannot imagine all of the millions of sf in air rights on those two sites.

This area will be amazing in 20 years.

Aren't those warehouses historical? What's their name or adress? I'd like to look for more photos of them.

No. Only the third and fourth ones north of the park are. The first two are not.
