This seems to be completely different from anything else and by far more than I expected. Just like Architecture lover I was expecting something like a sculpture. But this is just spectacular!

NEW YORK | 30 Hudson Yards - Manhattan Tower | 387m | 1268ft | 73 fl | U/C

I'm happy to read it has an elevator. But still seems like it's not the most accessible for everyone. Considering all the public money going into the area, a design easily accessible for all should've been considered.

It's a sculpture, it looks unconventional so we can refer to it as a structure, too.
I like the bronze, I wonder if it will create the famous turquoise patina after some period, or they'll maintain the surface shiny.

I also like the use of greenery, the trees and flowers make the whole space even more harmonious.

I really don't have a strong reaction, positive or negative towards this sculpture.
Tho I will say it is visually appealing and I personally thought it would look worse. In the end this is a nice addition to HY.
Time will tell if it becomes as iconic as it is intended.

It's a public sculpture where New Yorkers and tourists could socialize, appreciate the rest of the architecture and even workout.

Of course the main purpose of a sculpture in a public space is to look interesting and to add aesthetics to the overall space, most of the time people will probably use it as a place that allows them to enjoy the panoramic views and socialize, anyhow if people still can't understand, then I'm not able (nor willing) to explain the purpose of a public sculpture.
I only quoted (somehow) what was written in the article from The New York Times on the previous page, if people don't understand the purpose behind the structure, they should read about it. After all maybe people wouldn't climb the staircase as an exercise, but it might happen to people jogging around (if it's not crowded with tourists), this doesn't necessarily mean that it's the main purpose.
It does seem quite expensive, but maybe the reason is the use of bronze - which I prefer shiny as seen in the render, at least for this sculpture.

There isn't a dedicated thread for the Vessel, is there? Since it's going to be (sort of) occupiable, and an interesting construction project in its own right, I would argue it should have one -- but in the meantime, I guess this is the de fact best place to discuss it.

Based on Heatherwick's other work, I had set my expectations somewhere between "blah" and "atrocity," so this is a pleasant surprise. I don't love it, but it's much better than what I thought we might wind up with.

My main hesitation is the bronze. Not that I think it's an intrinsically cheesy material (although more often than not!) but because it contrasts awkwardly with the blue glass on all sides. At least in the renders, which are shit and not doing Heatherwick any favors. It's too bad there's only one obvious place to put it, because I actually think it would fit in a lot better in front of 55 HY -- they share a similar 70s Mod lineage.

My actual first thought was, "Where is that $200 Million going?" But I realized the engineering costs must be huge: it's essentially 16 stories of interlocking cantilevers, so it must take a hell of a lot to keep it standing upright in the best of conditions. Add to that the NYPD's justifiable concerns about terrorism in every major gathering place and you can see how the price of keeping it safely anchored might skyrocket. Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a huge security checkpoint in the center of the plaza.

But that bit of pessimism aside, I like the ideas behind the sculpture more than anything. Whether you appreciate it as a piece of art, it will create a focal point for the plaza -- a natural gathering spot for selfie-takers, view-seekers, romantics and the athletically inclined. I don't doubt that there will be a community of regular, Fitbit-wearing stair-runners congregating each morning. They'll probably coin some term like "the weave" or "the loop" for the feat of hitting every step on a single run.

Plus, it will be a very cool spot to view the growing neighborhood from. Obviously not quite as dramatic as the observation deck 80 stories overhead, but more intimate, human-scaled and mercifully free (right?) And anyone who makes it to the top but is disappointed with the view will have a direct sightline to the deck high above and might just say to themselves, "Well hey, that looks like it might be worth $45."
