i can't see the penguin! I also think it would look better without the platform, but the platform will be pretty cool anyway and I think I will grow to love it in the end.

I think that the platform makes it look taller, and gives it the punctuation to stand out and make Hudson Yards a landmark on the skyline.

I think the platform is really a Rorschach's Test.

Given that we have buildings going up literally cantilevering over their neighbors, a deck really never registered with me as being detrimental to 30HY.

I think the platform - at least the portion with the portal - should clear "the deck, 10 floors below" that you pointed out.

In any case, regarding the specific angles to street-level, I've wondered about that, myself. What I have only been able to surmise is that the portal itself is pitched, rather than being perfectly flush with the platform, itself.

There are no satisfactory renders to judge with any certainty, but it would appear that the glass constituting the "bottom" of the portal is probably angled at something like 30-40°.

You will be looking out at an angle, not directly straight down.

Additionally, as there are so many renders - many from the early stages in which they hadn't divulged anything about the portal - it's unclear how sloped the actual platform, itself, will be. Although, it's becoming apparent that it is indeed sloped.

In any case, I think this is largely understating how significant the views will be from this observation deck: it will be the only one that offers a N-S, panoramic view from downtown to uptown, as opposed to the 360° experience (e.g. 30 Rock, 1WTC).

That is, it's location on the far West Side will give views of Midtown, in profile, that not many people have seen before, unless they've visited the Hoboken/Palisades area, generally.

Otherwise, one only catches a glimpse of this on the approach to the Lincoln Tunnel - in NJ, [unsatisfactorily] from the river, in photos, via a drone, or in a plane.

In other words, it will probably be a new perspective and thus fairly popular.
Though, it is unclear just how much bigger the "Observation Deck Pie" can get, at this point.

That kind of opened observation deck is what I miss in WTC1. It will be the third one in NYC after Rockefeller Center and Empire State Building.

The scale of the HY development is very impressive.

I agree, it really brings fresh look between all those brick neighborhoods, not that I don't like them, but it's always good to see change.

When we'll see these pics ten years from now we'll think: It was so empty back then.

Very good point. The closest thing to this right now is rooftop at the Ink Hotel, farther north on 48th & 11th.

That looks up against the wall of Midtown. This, though, will tower over much of it.
