we do not want non union building stuff like this.

this is an important compromise because it secures the project labor and shows a willingness to negotiate between management and labor.

Are these towers being built in addition to the Brookfield towers or instead of them??

In addition. They're different sites owned by different developers.

I'm curious, does anyone know what the dimensions are of the building? I'm trying to make it in Minecraft but it keeps coming out too fat.

Thanks!

you need to mod minecraft to build it in minecraft, since minecraft does not allow for buildings over 256m

Speaking of which...

Disclaimer, to avoid hundreds of posters asking the same question over and over this ground breaking refers only to the South Tower, i.e. the 310 meter tower. North one is waiting for a tenant.

Ross thanks God he lives in NYC, says low prices are bringing tenants to Hudson Yards: VIDEO

September 12, 2012 03:00PM

Related Companies Chairman Stephen Ross thanked god that he decided to move to New York, a city whose prospects he was very high on, in an appearance today on Bloomberg Television’s “Market Makers.” The developer also discussed his firm’s Hudson Yards development at length (see video above).

Where as the struggling economy is limiting opportunity for real estate investment throughout much of the country, New York City continues to be in high demand among residents and job-seekers, ensuring that it is”the global capital.”

“It’s a city of choice for everybody,” he said. “I’m not a New Yorker but thank God I came here, because I don’t think there’s any other city like it in the world.”

Ross confirmed that Related will break ground on the first tower this fall and that the firm is in the middle of negotiations with several high-profile possible tenants for the 4 million square feet of office space planned for the first phase of Hudson Yards. He acknowledged that he’s hoping to lure tenants with discounts, and is asking $70 per foot in rent or is willing to sell space to tenants “at cost.”
“When you build a project that size you need a critical mass because … nobody wants to be in a construction zone for a long period of time,” he said. “We look at it where we’re building 4 million square feet of office and we’re looking to really give a value proposition to the tenants to bring them in. We have the rest of the project where we’ll make our profits and how we’ll really succeed. We’re making it a proposition today it’s hard for them to say no to.”

Ross was not asked about his stepping down as CEO of the firm. [Bloomberg] – Adam Fusfeld

Related to Start Second Hudson Yards Portion by Mid-2013

By David M. Levitt
September 12, 2012

Quote:
Related Cos., developer of New York’s Time Warner Center, expects to start work on a second portion of its Hudson Yards project in the city by the middle of next year, Chairman Stephen Ross said. Construction on the first tower, the future headquarters of Coach Inc., will begin by November. Ross is confident that he will have enough lease commitments to begin the next section in mid-2013, he said today in an interview. Related is “far along with several tenants that really want to be there,” he said separately on Bloomberg Television’s “Market Makers” with Stephanie Ruhle and Erik Schatzker.

“When you build a project that size, you need a critical mass,” Ross said on the show, without naming potential tenants. “We’re looking to really give a value proposition to the tenants, like at cost, to bring them in, because we have the rest of the project to amortize, where we’ll make our profits. We’re making a proposition where it’s hard for them to say no.” The 46-story Coach tower, at 10th Avenue and West 30th Street, is one of two buildings planned for an eastern section of the project that doesn’t require a platform over the railroad tracks. Construction of the decking for the second portion should cost about $800 million, Related Hudson Yards President L. Jay Cross said in an interview last year.

Ross isn’t worried about financing the project, he said in the interview.

The portion of the project to start next year will include a second office tower and a 750,000-square-foot retail complex, along with a hotel and some residential units, he said. Both eastern sections should be completed by 2017, according to Ross.

P.S.: Here's a rendering of the 300m+ hotel/condo, which will be the third supertall to rise on the easter portion of the HY.

Just so everyone is clear, the portion Related expects to start by the middle of next year includes the 1292 foot office building, the 300 meter mixed use building which RW posted a rendering of in post 1390, AND a roughly 800 foot residential building designed by KPF, unfortunately no renderings for that KPF building yet. However, KPF does very good work. They recently did a much smaller building called One Jackson Square not that far from this here (I don't want to post pictures not related to the project), but that building is really fantastic, so I have high hopes for the 800 foot residential as well.

So by this time next year within one large block, 4 buildings ranging from 800 ft to 1292 ft should be U/C, if that time table is stuck with. Exciting times.

Edit, thought this might help people unfamiliar with the site. The Eastern Railyard is what's being referred to, credit to NYGuy on SSP for posting this don't know where he got it from. It should also be noted that the two grey lots adjacent to the 7 train stop, and just north of the Eastern Yards are where One Hudson Yards and the Girasole will rise if I'm not mistaken. Someone correct me if I'm wrong with that last bit, but there are so many proposals for this area it's hard to keep track of.

One more rough rendering... (Thanks to Hudson11 for this one).

I still kinda wish there'll be a design change. To me the current designs just doesn't appear good enough for a project of this magnitude. They aren't bad, but I still think a more iconic design should have been chosen

Though I completely agree that the impact on the city of this project will be very important and very positive

A lot more. Due to the unique zoning of this area, it will be a forest of supertalls.

The Oriental Pearl Tower and the Gherkin are hideous, but still iconic.

Both of these buildings (especially first one) are awful and wouldn't fit NYC's skyline at all.
