Although it is not really in danger, Sun Life Financial has been affected by the US financial crisis. So it may be a while before the sun rises in Taguig due to the cloud cover in the US (sorry, couldn't resist the lame pun).

Excerpts of statement from Sun Life Philippines

"Manila, Philippines - Policy holders of Sun Life Philippines are concerned because its parent firm, Sun Life Canada -- has investments in Lehman Brothers.

But, officials of the insurance firm say Sun Life Canada has very little exposure to Lehman, and that the majority of Sun Life Philippines' funds are invested locally.
Sun Life assures its clients that the collapse of Lehman has no impact at all with respect to its financial position in the Philippines."

Sun Life gets SEC nod to set up headquarters

THE CORPORATE watchdog has given Hong Kong-based Sun Life Financial Asia Services the permission to set up a regional operating headquarters in the Philippines.

Based on documents submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Sun Life wants to set up the headquarters, which will serve its subsidiaries, branches and affiliates here and in the region. It will engage in general administration, business planning and coordination, corporate finance advisory services, marketing control and sales promotion.

The headquarters will also train and manage personnel, conduct research and process data.

In a telephone interview, Isla Lipana & Co. lawyer Ma. Lourdes P. Lim said Sun Life would be engaging in back office operations. The law firm, which facilitated the SEC application, declined to provide details.

In a separate interview, Sun Life Philippines Communication Officer Mariquit Lintag said the Hong Kong-based company would be headed by Riza Mantaring, who was named regional chief operations officer in August.

She will be responsible for the company’s information technology and operations across the Asia-Pacific. The firm’s application before the corporate regulator was recommended by the Board of Investments on Oct. 21.

Sun Life Financial (Philippines) has earmarked P2 billion for the construction of its own building in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig.

“The property market is clearly on an upswing,” Sun Life Philippines president Henry Herrera said. “We’re building our own office in Fort Bonifacio. We just got approval from our global [chief executive officer] and we’re now on the final stages.”

Sun Life Philippines currently holds office at the Enterprise Building along Ayala Avenue in Makati.

Sun Life acquired the 2,400-square meter property in Fort Bonifacio in 1996 for some P280 million and had planned to construct a building on it. The Asian financial crisis in 1997, however, prompted the company to postpone the construction.

Herrera said Sun Life would hold offices in the new building and lease out some floors to other companies.

“We had waited a long time to build our office and we feel this is a right time to move to the outskirts of Makati,” Herrera said. The insurance firm is hoping to complete the building by 2010.

Sun Life has not approved the final design but it is looking at a 16- to 18-floor building.

Sun Life may avail itself of income tax holidays if it decides to have the building declared by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority as an information technology park.

Many buildings in Metro Manila, specifically those housing call center and other business process outsourcing offices, had sought the IT park zone declaration from Peza.

Sun Life has three companies operating in the Philippines: Sun Life of Canada (Philippines) Inc., which sells life insurance; Sun Life Asset Management Co. Inc., which offers mutual fund products; and Sun Life Financial Plans Inc., which markets education and pension plans.

Sun Life of Canada, the first to sell life insurance in the Philippines back in 1895, is among the top three life insurers in the country.
