Regional Plan Association, an "influential research and advocacy group", proposes a shutdown of New York's subway during weekday nights, NYT reports. I've been very briefly interviewed by one of the authors.

NEVER,NEVER, NEVER!!! NYC subway is 24/7/365 since 10/27/1904 and will be always 24/7/365!!!

New bill could protect 24-hour subway service "lifeline"

Okay, here I am for bringing nuance to the case: there is no reason to stop with the 24/7 service on the NYC metro, and why? Because even if you would close two tracks, there are still two other tracks to drive on, heck, even if one out of just two tracks is closed, the train should be able to use the other.

This means however that at some moments (local) stations better be closed for weeks during the night, to open again after works are complete. Or reducing service when only one track is available. So hard it isn't.

Or they could, just like the Dutch ProRail, go full-idiot and close off long stretches of railway for the tiniest operations on a single track, but that overprotectionism is hurting our economy rather than it ever solved the problem of regular maintenance. Maintenance elsewhere in the world is good as well without full closures, or even permanent night closures (other countries have night trains as well, be it sleeper trains).

Relieving the pressure on Dutch housing market: we need more apartments and taller apartment buildings, no single-family dwellings anymore!

Prohibit the construction of new single-family dwellings without stacking apartments in Amsterdam (A10), Rotterdam (motorway ring), The Hague, Utrecht (outer ring), Eindhoven (ring), Tilburg (ringbanen) and Groningen (provincial ring)!

And prohibit the use of agricultural land for new dwellings!

Copenhagens S-train system will be driverless in stages between 2022 and 2036 and will most like be 24/7 when they are ready.

The outline is to use the F line (ring line) as a test track in 2022 and have all lines ready in 2030.

The trains that will be able to go driverless will be introduced from 2026 to 2036, what they do on the ring line in 2022 isn´t specified.

How so, loooong deadlines?

The only reason for the long deadline is that the S-train will be replaced in stages from 26 to 36 any way, and since the new CBCT control system that are currently being installed allow for driverless operation its a very obvious thing to do.

The only downside is that no one has done it on such
a large network before, so like the signal programme for the long distance trains we will yet again be frontrunners.

Ok, there will not be the motorman, but there will be at least the conductor 24/7?

For Micro: I think that it should be specified on metrobits.org that the Metro of Minneapolis is a Metro Light Rail (like Sydney).

Metro Light Rail (Green Line and Blue Line -airport section-) could be a better and clearer form
