Wow, that's something like 1,100 units underway on/near Market (not including the one on 65th), in addition to 1,400 completed in the last couple rounds. Although central Ballard is a large geographic area, that still a heck of an increase in density, and it's starting to reach some cohesiveness. Next we need that 300 units next to the hospital (which looks close to getting its conditional MUP and is trying to overlap the building permit phase with that...winter start seems possible).

Ballard needs high capacity transit to DT. Or maybe a streetcar with as much grade separation as possible. That street between dt and Ballard (on the Westside of QAH, don't know the name) is a major choke point and only gonna get worse with the added density.

Maybe a loop that connects the slut to Ballard and turns east to connect with the UD?

There's a movement called Seattle Subway that aims to do just that. It'll take years, but we'll get there.

Of course, all of this development in Ballard really started as a response to the monorail, which should have been up and running a few years ago...

Anyone want to explain the "boundaries" of Ballard? There's some developments that are definitely around that area, but I'm not sure whether they should be Ballard or not.

I'm not sure if this is still true, but there used to be some pretty serious border wars between Ballard and Fremont. The "Welcome to Ballard signs" were located about a quarter mile on the Fremont side of the "Welcome to Fremont" signs that faced in the opposite direction (or vice-versa if you want to look at it that way).

Rail--and I hope it WILL be rail--can't come soon enough for me. Interesting that ST is involved here, which suggests light rail.

Yeah, money for a study on high-capacity transit alternatives between Downtown and Ballard was included in ST2. The City of Seattle's contribution is accelerating that. It'll be interesting to see what the study determines. It seems like they usually go into studies with an idea of what they want the result to be, but I don't think there's a clear goal for this one.

Well I hope they realize that a westlake alignment serves a COMPLETELY different corridor than a 2nd ave/interbay alignment.

I also hope they realize that there is only ONE mode that will work as HCT: fully grade separated light rail or subway. My fear is that we'll get a 'rapid' streetcar on Westlake to Ballard, and people will use that as an excuse/argument not to fund or build a proper subway line there.

Article in the Times says Ballard has good transportation. I think our choices actually decreased with the last transit shake-up. Rail to Ballard NOW!
