Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has issued a directive to complete the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. These remaining works include the installation of 182 sunshades to protect worshippers, more places of prayer, parking facilities and the completion of roadwork projects. The cost of the project will be SR 4.7 billion [U.S. $1.25 billion].

The king also ordered the expansion of the eastern courtyard of the Prophet's Mosque to an area of 35,000 square meters with an additional capacity for 70,000 more worshippers. Other new projects in the Holy Mosque include the construction of 182 umbrellas at various locations in the courtyard to provide protection against the hot sun in the summer and heavy rain in the rainy seasons.

Each umbrella covers an area of 576 square meters. There are also new schemes in place for the drainage of floodwater and better lighting and acoustic systems in the courtyards. Once the expansion work is completed, the area will be able to accommodate 200,000 worshippers.

The three new tunnels with additional exits and entries to car parks are expected to considerably reduce traffic problems in the mosque zone.

what you seen it's only phase 1 after completion they will start to phase #2 & #3

Hi i'm interested to know more about the history of the prophet mosque expansion. Anyone here know any good website with pictures or video of the expansion of the mosque from maybe the first expansion to now. I have to admit it, the expansion pictures are rare on the internet.

Very nice thread! I am opposed to creating towers for Madinah. Madinah is so far my favorite city in Saudi. It has a very European feel to it, and its purely Islamic. The best thing about Madinah is that you get the privelage of being next to the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him).

Here are some pictures of minor works taking place around the Haram.

These are on the Southern, Western and Northern sides.
The Eastern side has major construction ( next to Baqee ) There is a very big construction site which has been excavated (very deep ) for the parking and toilets. Ill take those photos later inshaallah.

These photos show the extra lighting pillars being constructed as well as new sewerage etc

also note one "test" umbrella pillar outside Bab us Salaam. It maybe that the pillars under construction now will be also with umbrellas...

Plenty Hotels being constructed - will take photos another time inshaallah
