The chairman, Steve Lansdown, announced last may that they would indeed be using red brick on the stadium to imitate the warehouse buildings in the south Bristol area, which is an idea I applaud.
But to what extend we have no idea. In my sketchup interpretation of the stadium (last page), I have basically taken it to the limit in recreating the bonded warehouse effect, to the dismay of some City fans on various forums - 'like a prison' - was one comment! But I think if red brick is used (it's not a definate yet, that's for sure) it will be a partial cladding, mixed with more current styling such as glass and coloured panelling. I think it is as much to appease the council (another shrewd masterstroke from SL) as to a genuine innocent conception. |

I would have no problem if the outside looked like that. |

Brick has already been done guys;
![]() ![]() The Stadium of Light probably has one of the best facades of any of the new stadia, but also one of the least recognised. As part of the planning the club were forced to build the man stand backing onto the river as the local authority wanted it to be a focal point in the regeneration of the area and wanted a view from the other river bank. Most away fans never actually see the stand above as the approach from the city centre is from behind the stadium to the right and the away end is the South stand to the right. All they ever see is more of what you can see to the right of the second picture. The North side was originally like that also but when it was extended, the brick facade went around the corner and the escape stairs from the new upper tier are also brick with large black cat motifs on them (the eyes are lit up at night!!!)as can be seen from the shot of the North West corner below; ![]() ![]() If the stadium ever gets extended to its full 66 thousand capacity, the brick facade will carry all the way round. Hope you lads get the stadium you deserve, it's a strange thing moving grounds and once in a lifetime, so needs to be done right. Last edited by Blackcatfan; January 12th, 2009 at 11:16 PM. |

I agree that the use of red brick gives the SoL a sense of solidity and permanence. One thing I've always wondered though....what was the thinking behind the name? I have to say, a football ground in the North East of England called 'The Stadium of Light' seems a bit silly and pretentious to me.
Nice of them to include Bob Stokoe's wife in the statue though ;-) |

Yeah it was a strange choice, but much better than a sponsored name such as the Walkers etc.
I like the brick finish, it is true that the more common angle seen of the SOL (as Blackcat stated above) does it an injustice. |

The name, Stadium of Light, is a reference to a miner's lamp as the stadium is built on the site of the old Wearmouth Colliery, and to the many Sunderland fans that have worked in the regions mines.

Hi! I'm from Russia. The stadium is equipped with a field of heating and places for people with disabilities? Thank you.

Eh?
Sorry, don't understand that.. unless you are asking whether the new Stadium will have undersoil heating and a disabled section? It will definately have the latter, quite likely the former. |

Ok! So your stadium in line with international standards. We are building two stadiums suychas to 30000, which is similar to the New Bristol City FC Stadium.

Most new stadiums will have undersoil, and every stadium has disabled access!
Apart from doncaster. Believe it or not their chairman didnt want undersoil heating in their brand new stadium 'because we wont need it cos of global warming'. Safe to say, the man is an idiot!

Not as ridiculous as those behind the Darlington Arena, however. They have undersoil heating, but the club can't afford to run it. How ridiculous is that?

The stadium plans will be unveiled to the public on the 26th-27th of this month, at Ashton Gate.
So far we've learned the stadium will glow red at night.... fingers crossed on this one.

Getting closer......
I'm thinking a giant red beacon thrust into the sky like the batman call sign but with the Robins' crest on top. You'll be able to see it from space don't you know. Love to see the Gasheads faces

Yes 30k, but with expansion to 42k very much in mind for a possible WC bid. Aparrently one side stand will house 13000, the other 7000 but with tiers of boxes so that the heights are the same. Which of course means each end will be 5k initially..
