Indonesia: Australian tourists return to Bali

Denpasar, 17 Jan. (AKI) - Australian tourists are returning to the Indonesian island of Bali after the fatal bomb attacks on the island in 2002 and 2005 and several drug cases apparently drove them away.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Indonesia jumped to fourth place on the list of the most popular overseas destinations for Australians in 2007.

The ABS said the total number of Australian travellers increased by nearly 65 percent to a total of roughly half a million.

In 2006, Indonesia was the ninth choice for Australian travellers. Other top destinations for Australian tourists are New Zealand, the United States, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Competitive international airfares are said to be one reason for Australians taking more overseas holidays.

The number of international arrivals to the archipelago's main tourist location, Bali, fell dramatically after the October 2002 and October 2005 Bali bombings, as travellers feared further attacks.

The highly publicised drug trial of Australian Schapelle Corby also deterred tourists. Corby is currently serving a 20-year sentence for drug smuggling in Bali but many Australians still believe she is innocent.

The so-called “Bali nine” case involving a nine members of a drug ring caught trying to smuggle 8.2 kg of heroin from Bali into Australia in April 2005 has also created fierce debate. Six of them are currently awaiting execution in Bali.

The Indonesian government has a goal to attract seven million tourist arrivals during this year’s Visit Indonesia programme and expects to make some 6.7 billion dollars in foreign exchange revenue from tourism this year.

Last year, Indonesia received around 5.5 million international visitors, which was half a million short of official targets, but still generated around 5.3 billion dollars in foreign exchange income.

no mater what the news is, Indonesia is still and would always be beautiful

one of my pet peeves about indo/bali tourism is that somehow the indonesian people have this obsession that if the the ang moh/bule people are coming, tourism is booming again. also here in bali, it bugs me sometimes how the locals would treat bule (even the dirt poor/backpacker types) better than other asian tourists. is that like remnants of the colonial days? one thing that indonesia has to remember is that during the down time of tourism period; sars, numerous bombings, etc, the asian/asean tourists are the ones that still came to indo, and poured money into your economy. at the moment there's a big number of visitors coming from china and india, and it breaks my heart how sometimes the locals would not treat them as well as how they treat the bule. this racist mentality has got to change, the sooner the better. there's the misconception that asian tourists spend much less money than their bule counterparts. i had a fabulous dinner at the bvlgari resort (which is probably the most expensive hotel in bali) and the patrons were mostly asians.

Totally agree with you Farean.
Soal banyaknya komentar negatif di internet ttg viy 2008 anggap aja angin lalu. Masuk kuping kiri keluar kanan.

hello again people! i haven't contributed to this forum in a while. since i moved to bali, i became very much interested in indo tourism. i found this article about indo tourism and though it's an interesting read.

http://www.balidiscovery.com/message...ge.asp?Id=4225

i really believe indonesia needs to be much more aggressive competing with other asean nations. i'm def no expert in tourism, but i have to say that indonesia def has a large variety in beautiful scenery but majorly lacking in tourism infrastructure.

for eg. jakarta. i've been to jkt many times, both as a stewardess for sia, and now visiting friends in jkt. jakarta can be a lot of fun, but ONLY when you know people there. otherwise after seeing all the malls and a few tourist attractions that the city offers, my husband and i got bored. with all due respect, jakarta needs world class tourist attraction. taman mini, dunia fantasy, museum gajah, etc are NOT worldclass attraction; i found dufan to be a cheap copy of a disneyland. i also went to ragunan zoo and top of monas, and again, it's not a world class attraction i'm very sorry to say. i like jakarta now simply because we have some friends there. but without knowing anyone in the city, jakarta is not a really tourist friendly city.

unfortunately i have to agree on that... it's been hard also for me to promote Jakarta as a tourist destination to my foreign friends and objectively most of foreigners that come to Jakarta are for work and business purposes

IMO the highest priority of tourist attraction in Jakarta that should be:
*Jakarta Kota (preserve the heritage buildings that are crumbling, make this an exclusive pedestrian zone, clean up the canals and use it for boat cruising sightseeing like in Singapore River - maybe can go up to Sunda Kelapa harbour assuming no floods, more cafes around the canals, host more cultural events, creating it as a center of selling souvenir, etc. - getting to Kota area shouldn't be a hassle since the opening of the Transjakarta Busway line)

*Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (important as this is the place where foreigners can learn about traditional Indonesian culture and other aspects of our country as there are other museums available, i think just make sure that the cable car is functioning properly, the monorail is working, and increase in frequency of free shuttle ride, putting up more English signs would also be very nice - I'd really like to see a frequent free shuttle service from Kampung Rambutan or Pinang Ranti terminal to TMII as the Transjakarta Busway has also served to this area and can encourage more visitors to visit)

*Ragunan Zoo (maybe they can concentrate more on the native fauna of Indonesia - upgrading their 'kandang', making them more attractive and making sure the animals are in a "happy" state. More importantly, please do something to make the visitors more discipline, e.g. no loitering, clean up the restroom, etc. - accessability to here also has never been easier since the opening of the Transjakarta Busway line)

One last thing, I'd really like to see Jakarta city council to promote the image to tourist that the Transjakarta Busway has made it easier to explore Jakarta and that Transjakarta Busway should be one of the backbone to support tourism in Jakarta.

i agree with singaporegirl & ace i always find it hard to promote Indonesia - esp.Jakarta - to my foreign friends..

Jakarta might look fabulous , if u just see the nightshot posted here - in this forum..but in reality, Jakarta is not tourism friendly.

Instead of beautify other parts of the city, Govt is just concentrating to beautify Monas-Sudirman-Thamrin-Kuningan and other protocol street.

That's why Jakarta is lack of tourism amenities...
