There are rumors that the area just south of I-80 and University of Nevada that is currently run-down single family homes and apartments will be turned into a high-density university district. I think this will be huge for downtown. The University really needs some commercial nearby, and it will bring students downtown.

Also, south of the river there is a big empty lot owned by the city that they plan on turning into mixed use. It is a prime lot surrounded by mid-rise office buildings.

It has been reported that as part of the Grand Sierra Resort's future plans, eight new condo towers are to be built around the existing hotel.

It's been awhile since I've given any updates. This should cover the last 5 months or so.

An architect has been chosen for the NE University gateway project, here are some very rough sketches:






IMO, students downtown is the main thing that Reno is missing. I really hope this project can change that.

The West Street Market(a full-time farmers market) is now open.

Remember when they posted new images of the Waterfront Towers? Well, they changed their mind again and decided to just build retail. Here is another image:

nice, I had heard the announcement on the university gateway area but I hadnt seen any specifics. What is all planned to go there? I am attending UNR in the fall, and I think it would be wonderful to have downtown creep north a bit.

It is slated for completion in 2011, and has stirred some minor controversy with some calling it Nevada's own "bridge to nowhere", as there is already a highway between Carson and Reno. That highway has a large amount of traffic accidents and fatalities and goes through several residential areas, though.

I've never visited Reno, and I'm relatively unfamiliar with all of the redevelopment efforts. But, they seem impressive.

I live in the San Bernardino Valley of southern California, and the City of San Bernardino has recently hired Charles McNeely to serve as City Manager to help with its own transition that is intended to reestablish the municipality as an urban core that competes with Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, as well as other first-tier cities. So, I'm curious about the opinions of Reno residents, businesspeople, and developers who have knowledge of him. He seems competent and professional.

"Once constructed, the 1,700-foot (520 m) Galena Creek Bridge with its 690-foot (210 m) span over the creek will be the longest concrete arch bridge in the United States.[4] Construction is currently scheduled to wrap up on the project in 2011, although the new contractor on the project aims to finish the job six months ahead of schedule." --Wikipedia.

It will be a part of the new Interstate-280 in Washow County, Nevada.

1. I heard that the Galena Creek Bridge had cracks appearing in four different locations and they may shorten its expected lifespan by ten years.

2. The old Fitzgeralds Hotel is being rebranded as the CommRow, and the hotel portion of the structure will be reopened in 2012 as the Hang Hotel.

RAAB Meeting: Presentation of Downtown Post Office Plans

Remember the days when Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board meetings used to be interesting? The dreams and hopes of developers would funnel through the citizen advisory board almost every month prior to being presented to the Redevelopment Agency Board (City Council).

Well, wake up! Because things are about to get interesting again with the review of the plans for the downtown Post Office on Thursday at 3:30 in the 7th floor Public Works conference room at City Hall. Here's the link to the Agenda. While I'm not sure if there will be an official presentation or not, they usually at the very least have packets available for review by the public so you can follow what the board is discussing. If you're at all interested in what will become of the downtown post office, you may want to attend this meeting. It won't be the last time you get an opportunity to review the plans however...usually the RAAB is the second stop of a four-stop tour involving neighborhood advisory boards, the RAAB, then usually the Redevelopment Board and Planning Commission, or sometimes the reverse and it hits the Planning Commission first before going to the Redevelopment Agency Board. In any case, this won't be the only opportunity for you to learn what Bernie Carter has in store for the former post office building downtown, but it's a good chance to get a sneak peek.

Presents Measures to RAAB to Retain Historic Elements

The RAAB today heard Bernie and Tim Carter's presentation summary of how they plan to retain all of the building's historic elements. A gargantuan report was presented to the RAAB outlining three basic components:

1. Preservation - No damaging treatments, very specific rules to follow regarding cleaning.

2. Rehabilitation - Must be in line with historic preservation

3. Landscape Plan - A total reconstruction of the early landscape plan in near-identical fashion.

They key points are below:

- Exterior will remain identical to it is now, with the exception of the removal of the concrete United States Post Office sign on the Virginia Street side of the property, and the removal of the yellowish brick wall that encloses the loading docks on the northern side.

- The landscape plans revert back to the virtually identical landscape plans constructed when the building was first built.
