Could be the first Pei building to be demolished, huh?

Well, it's simple and sleek, but nothing special. What's going to be built there?

Tait Tower
1938-1939

The centerpiece of the Empire Exhibition of 1938, this Art Deco masterpiece stood 300 feet over Bellahouston Park. The Empire Exhibition took place at a time when Glasgow was the centre of British shipbuilding and engineering, and the materials - steel beams riveted together and clad in corrugated steel - were produced by Glasgow manufacturing plants. Tait's design and readily available materials made it possible for the tower to be constructed in only nine weeks. Due to the tower's height & the hill it was built on, the tower could be seen from over 100 miles away. Although it was intended to be a permanent monument to the exhibition, orders were given to demolish the tower in July 1939, pending the upcoming war with Germany. Today, only the foundations remain.

What new buildings will be on the sites of these three towers in Buenos Aires?

A rather nice tower in Frankfurt was imploded a few days ago.
AfE Turm

Tallest demolition in Europe, excluding antennas and chimneys

Actually that was today. That building had lift shaft problems.

The Gallowgate Twins, Scotland's tallest buildings are now both condemned, with demolition looming. There's a rumour floating around that they will be nibbled to death, as opposed to being blown up, but time will tell.

This was taken in November 2013, when there were only a few residents left in Bluevale (The block to the left of the image):

However & whenever they do go, I'll miss them. They are truly unique. We'll never see buildings of their kind again.

If they must go, at least go out with a bang.

What's interesting about the now-deceased AfE-Turm is that the south side of the building has 30 floors and housed offices, and the north side of the building had 22 floors and house seminar rooms (with 1.5 times the floor-to-ceiling height).

And another skyscraper is called to the ages...

The Tower in Germany might be a new World record. The current record holder was measured from the basement slab (it had 7 basements) to the top of the huge flagpole. If you measured the actual structure from grade I think it is shorter then the German one.

i REALLY liked the AfE tower in frankfurt.. should've been saved by monument protection
the lift-shaft problems are such a lame excuse. think of what nice appartements you coul've created in there with its unique partitioning of floor-heights..

kampflamm posted some "nice" pictures of its downfall in the german thread
the without any doubt highest quality video of the event is one.

That would really be a sad day. BTW I stayed on the 31s floor of the Stardust and the view of the strip was fatastic. Since it was only the second building from the start of the strip you reallyl got to see a great deal???

I disagree, and it was one of the very rare examples of Metabolist architecture.

Didn't find out until yesterday that the Bayer Hochhaus in Leverkusen was actually demolished in 2012. Some greenspace must occupy the site now.
